Question on 3d cards before i buy

by Schlom » Tue, 15 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Ok im considering either a V770 Ultra or a V3 3000.  However i dont know which
will work better with the sims i want to use them with.  I have a P2 300mhz
96Mb Ram and (very) cheap D3D support which hurts more than helps.  Right now
im running GPL at a solid 15-17 fps with ALL graphics on at Monza.  I take away
mirror graphics and i get close to 20....AI cars kill the frame rate unless its
only 6 cars and theyre not really in sight (like they usually are).

My big question is which card do i get?  The V770 Ultra seems to be the way to
go but ive heard good things about the V3 3000 as well.  Can anyone give me a
ballpark estimate on how much improvement i will see in these sims: N2/99, GPL,
SBK, SCGT and Indy Racing.  Thanks in advance.

N2/99/GPL really need a Glide or Rendition based chipset.  SBK requires D3D
I do believe, dunno been awhile...and I won't discuss the other two.

Depends on what you race more...if its N2/99/GPL then get a Voodoo3 OR get
the Ultra and a Voodoo2 card because not all the reports have come in good
about being able to run GPL with the OpenGL beta rasterizer.  And N2/99 only
support Rendition or Glide, period.

Personally I have a Hercules Ultra TNT2 on order to replace a failing 2D
card, but am keeping both Voodoo2s till I figure out if the TNT2 will be
able to run GPL or not. :)

Anything using Dirext X and OpenGl will be far better in terms of picture quality
on the V770. Anyhting that uses Glide.will work infinately better on the V3000
unless CL can improve their wrapper. For future games the V770 will *** the
V3000 in terms of perfromance and supported features. Look at the game sites, they
give pretty good and unbiased opinions and they all tend to argue for the TNT 2 in
terms of picture quality and future games performance.

The main issue when comparing the Voodoo3 and the TNT2 has been the
alck of 32 bit rendering on the Voodoo3 card.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was the absence of high-res
texturing support in the VooDoo3 ?

Or was it the lack of AGP support on Voodoo 3 ?
Or the 16Mb limit on the Voodoo 3 ?

The technically best boards today seems to be TNT2 boards and Matrox G400.
