3D Card - Buy V2200??

by Mark Daviso » Thu, 15 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I've got a P200. 32Mb, V1000 (3DB) + Voodoo1 (R3D).  The V1000 gives
slightly better performance than the Voodoo in GPL (1-2fps) which
surprised the hell out of me.
How much of an improvement can I expect moving to V2200 for GPL, N2 and
SODA without upgrading anything else?
Is my processor now my bottleneck?

I am aware that I'll not be able to do a awful of a lot of racing in GPL
without upgrading the whole lot, but for now, just smooth practice
sessions at a decent resolution would do as the M/B CPU upgrade route is
far too expensive (got a baby on the way in May!)

Who makes V2200 cards and how much can I expect to pay for one?  I've
been looking through PC mags and can't find a V2200 board - unless
they're 3Dfx, the chipset isn't often noted.

TIA

Mark,

I have a system simular to yours and bought a Thriller 3D  4MB card. How
much of a difference you ask? A ton of difference. That card has the V2200
chipset and its faster than the Monster 3D 2 I have also. The reason it is
faster is a Monster 3D 2 really doesnt perform well untill you go too a P2
processor. I have a 200 MMX with 48 RAM and those two cards I mention. You
can get the card as low as $75..I paid $119 at Compusa awhile back ago. You
can also get that card in 8MB version.

I had a 200mmx and a 4meg thriller was a big improvement, then i put in an
8meg thriller... way better still! then i upped to a 300cpu huge
difference, then I overclocked to 374cpu..    WOW  if performance in papy
sims is your priorty then get a Hercules Thriller 8 meg pci video card.
check pricewatch.com where the price now is $155 us
