Sidewinder FF Pro question

by Richard & Pernill » Tue, 08 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi!

I have a MS SW FF Pro which I've been very happy with...until now...

I just bought myself another ordinary analog device (a wheel), and I can't
get it to work unless a first uninstall the software for the Sidewinder
stick.

I have the Sidewinder software installed, and then choose to add another
device. After doing that, it says that the newly added device (the wheel)
isn't connected though it is! I then uninstall the Sidewinder software, and
then all of a sudden after a reboot done by the uninstall program - the
wheel works just fine?!?! The wheel is a Thrustmaster Nascar Pro, and when
I've been trying to get it to work, I have installed it as a two-axis - four
button joystick. With that said, it is not the software for the wheel that
is the problem, since I use Windows's own stuff for game devices.

I have tried to install first the Sidewinder with it's software, and then
the wheel. That didn't work. The Sidewinder keeps working just fine, but the
wheel is reported as not connected though it is. Then I tried just the
opposite - first I installed the wheel, then the Sidewinder and it's
software. Before I installed the Sidewinder software, the wheel worked just
fine, and then after installing the Sidewinder software, the entry for the
wheel device was gone?!?! and after adding it again, I got the same result -
not connected

So now to my question - if you use a MS Sidewinder FF Pro, does that mean
that you won't be able to use any other *** devices on your system?

Please tell me it isn't like that, because I want them both :)!

Thanks in advance!

Richard,

You should be able to run both with no problem, but not listing both
in your settings. If you have the SideWinder attached you must remove
it first, then close the Window. Open the control applet again and add
the ThrustMaster. You will have to do this for each device that you want
to use.

But why is it then that you can add as many game devices as you like in the
list for game controllers in Windows when it obviously doesn't work? And if
you choose the Advanced tab, you can fool around with ID's. What are those
ID's for?

I don't think it makes sense if you only can use one controller at a time,
and whenever you want to use another one, you must first uninstall the first
one and then add the second. And then after that do the same thing in the
reverse direction. Doesn't really fit in modern time...

OK.

I'll try this out. But I'm doubtful whether it will work, because when I add
any device when the software for the Sidewinder is installed, it never says
'OK' in the status for the device. And if I try to communicate with it in
any way, for example by trying to calibrate it, I only get a message saying
that the device isn't working, and that I should check if it's connected.

I think it's nuts that you should have these kind of problems in an OS that
hasn't been out for more that a couple of months, and an OS they say will
give you more joy and fun with your computer, a pure multimedia OS of the
90'th...oh yeah, that was a good one Bill...

You switch off your PC to swap controllers? Just say NO! :)

I have a similar setup, and got pretty disgusted with the whole mess,
too. Since the GPL demo came out, I haven't found a desire to switch
over to the SWFF Pro.

Michael.

You have the same setup as me, and you say it works...? I'm so happy :)!

Could you please describe again to me exactly how you installed your
devices, what drivers you use for them, and what you have to do to make it
work?

Thanks in advance

:)

Yes, actually I do turn my PC off when I swap controllers. I always thought
that you should, and that what they say in all documentation.

But maybe it's time to be a rebel :)!

Oh, yeah. They do say so, and probably with good reason. I haven't
managed to short mine out, yet, but you shouldn't take my bad advice.
The only devices that should be swapped "hot" are USB and RS232 devices.

Michael.
