OT: Asus P4T-E mobo query

by GMpartsgu » Thu, 11 Apr 2002 07:33:02

Hello all !
 I've just upgraded my old P3 1gig system with a new P4 1.8 and Asus P4T-E
combo. I've upgraded my own comp a couple times and never ran across this
before.
The comp installed an MPU-401 device that doesnt do a thing, plus i got a
message when re-installing my old Diamond MX300 sound card about not being
plugged into the primary PCI bus. It also mentioned the MPU-401, and other
devices not working in this config. The only other card i use in this thing
besides my Asus V8200 G3 card, is my 3Com network card.
Everything works fine, but i would like to get the sound card on the
primary PCI bus and kill two birds with one stone. So, heres the
question.... How do i know which PCI slot is the primary PCI bus???  I
always thought that the PCI slot (1) next to the AGP slot was a shared IRQ
(i am not using that slot right now for that reason). I'm not a computer
wizard, so i hope this isnt too stoopid of a question :)
 Thanks for listening, guys. BB

Total guess, but does your MB have an on-board sound card? Try disabling it
in the BIOS and, if that fails, find a jumper on the MB itself to disable
it. I know my PC had problems until I disabled the built-in sound (I think
it's a Yamaha chip of some kind). BIOS didn't work, I had to use the jumper.

in the manual it should have a chart showing IRQ allocations for all the
PCI/AGP slots. Choose only slots that are not shared with something else
that you are using.

That's one of the pages i have marked. But Asus has it in a table with an
alphabetic listing for IRQ's. I'll just plug the sound card into an
non-shared slot, and quit wondering about Chinese translation charts :).
Just seems weird this mobo will install a MPU-401 device (whatever that is)
even though i had no sound card physically installed and no on-board sound
built into it. Guess this makes me a specialist in guessnostics and
swaptronics. Hee heee. Thanks  Bob for pulling my head outta you know where.

That is strange, I have no idea why it would install an MPU-401 device with
no sound card but thats what makes computer building so much fun. <g>

Not sure anymore, but I think an "MPU-401 device" refers to and old external
dos midi sound device often used to get better sound in games. ie better
then a standard Sound Blaster card.

Modern sound devices often emulate one of these for some retro
compatability.

So check your sound card documentation to check.

Since you have this board, and newsgroup access, check out
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus
It's one stop shopping for Asus related questions.
For this question, I think the MPU-401 is onboard built-in audio for that
motherboard.  You probably need to set a jumper or DIP switch (or maybe it's
a BIOS setting) to disable the MPU-401 so that it doesn't conflict with your
MX300.  Actually, you might want to try it without the MX300 and see what
the MPU can do for your sound as it's a pretty new board - maybe it's better
than the MX300?

Thanks for the newsgroup idea, im gonna ask them. This mobo doesnt have
onboard audio, and theres nothing that i can see in the bios to shut it off.
I'll scour the book and bios again, but i think this is just going to be a
permanent yellow ? listed in "other devices". My other gripe with this board
is not being able to disable the PS/2 mouse port, i can run my Intellimouse
as either PS/2 or USB. I have always used it in the USB, now i gotta run it
in the PS/2 port or i get another one of those big yellow ? in device
manager too. It's no big wiggle, but seems strange that i cant disable it.
Thanks for your input Philip !

Most bioses have an option for USB keyb or mouse, so I'm sure if you
enable that it will disable the corresponding ps/2 port.

MPU-401 is a midi sound device of some description, this has come
standard with sound cards since the old sb16. Do you have a modem
attached? Often these will install sound drivers and such (although
not midi sound stuff normally). Often listed as "serial wave device"
or similar. But it certainly does sound like an onboard sound conflict
anyway. Check the bios thoroughly (maybe flash it to a newer version)
as there may be a conflict in that it thinks you have onboard sound,
but you don't.

MPU-401 device *is* a MIDI device.  Not for sounds in games, but to actually
connect to MIDI instruments.  The old soundblasters had this capability
built-in, correct.

E, you are probably correct.  All I rememer about it is that if you had one
that some old games could use it to give much better sound than the original
SB alone.  I always thought that the original SB had a connector to the
MPU-401 device but was not one itself.

Now I have and Audigy Platinum Ext with every conceivable sound connection
possible but still haven't hooked up a even a keyboard (synth) to it or even
my guitar.  Even got some soft synth, mixer and recording stuff included but
still haven't had the time to play with it.  Can't see it helping my lap
times.  ;O)

This is a MX300, Aureal2 based card. And this is the 3rd mobo to wear this
sound card (i.e. ancient). None of my other cards tried to install anything
like this. I got enough files installed to get it out of "other devices" and
into the 'sound and video" where i disabled the frippin thing and its no
longer hogging IRQ 10. Now i can sleep at night knowing Windows is confused
and not me !
