Problem with ASUS P3V4X Mobo and GPL Discovered!

by Tom Pabs » Wed, 04 Jul 2001 04:09:45

Guys....

Late last week I posted a problem with attempting to install GPL on a new
computer system (previously never had GPL installed on it).....and the issue
with the "ActiveMovie" warning on the GPL install.  Then, when attempting to
enter a GPL track....would get the error message "Can Not Initialize
Replay....Canceling Race Weekend".....error.  These two issues turned out to
be "coincidental" and not related to each other.

Over this past weekend, I decided to install a GF2 Nvidia card into this
rig.......to see if the problem might be only associated with the V5500 card
(long shot...but I was running out of good ideas to try)....and
"bingo"....out comes the problem big time!  It was worse....now.... no
"video" functions on my system would work at all.  All would crash,
including running 3DMark2000.

This sent me directly to the ASUS and Nvidia tech boards.  After a few
hours, I discovered (in the Nvidia FAQ).....that the ASUS P3V4X mobo does
not report video memory properly through Windows 9x.  It also is completely
unstable if AGP 4x is activated.  So, this is why installing the GF2
card...made the problem much worse!  What happens when attempting to run
GPL....is the "replay system" gets an "out of memory" call from
Windows...and then GPL aborts loading the track.

At the moment....there's no known fix for this (by me at least).  Although I
have tried a few of the "suggestions"....none have worked except rebooting
Windows holding the shift key down.....then the video memory is reported
properly on start up....and the first application that uses video-based
memory will run.  This must be done each time you want to run GPL.....so, in
my opinion...its not a "fix"....but a cumbersome "workaround."

The ASUS P3V4X was (is) a popular board for the P3-500 to P3-800 Intel
CPU's.....so there must be some of you running this board?  I bought this
mobo several months ago (after removing my P3-800 Intel CPU in favor of
switching to AMD platforms for sim racing)......and didn't get around to
installing it in a business-ops computer until a few weeks ago.  If there
has been a BIOS revision (I haven't found one) or something from VIA that
has fixed this problem....I'd sure appreciate an email from you?

Thanks in advance, for any info you can provide on the is mobo bug!

Regards,

Tom Pabst

You can't 'disable' the feature that's causing the problem in the BIOS setup?
That sucks...

I have no issues at all with 4x and my GeForce 256 card. I think the issue
is with GF2 cards.  You get no improvement from 2x to 4x, so leave it at 2x
and you should be fine.

Hi

Here's my system spec:

Asus P3V4X Bios rev.1004
PIII 733MHz
Asus V6600 (Geforce 256) with Asus 6.31 drivers, AGP 2x
DirectX 7.0a
Win98 SE

I had some trouble with the graphics drivers (Nvidia and Asus), some of them were quite
crappy. Now 6.31 works for me with GPL, GP3, F1RC, GP500, MBTR, but it freezes NFS PU Demo
(seems to be a well known problem) and messes up sound in Toca2.

Good luck!

I'm using a P3V4X (1006.002 bios) and a GFmx (6.50 bios) at 2x, Via 4.28
drivers with the D3D patch and have no problems?  I know the board doesn't
like shared slots, so leave slot 1 empty.   Try posting the problem at
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus.

Problem with ASUS P3V4X Mobo and GPL Discovered!

by Ford Powe » Wed, 04 Jul 2001 08:17:47

Wow!, No real problems here.

ASUS P3V4X (Via 4.29 Drivers)(1006 Bios)

128Mb High End Crucial Ram
Elsa GF2 Ultra (11.00 drivers)
40 Gig IBM Drive
Win 98SE (All Updates)
ECCI Wheel
PDPI Game Card
SB Live
Klipsch (2 Subs, 4 Speakers)
GPL
N4
Heat Trucks
Collin Macrae 2
Leadfoot
(I use Daemon tools for all cd required programs)

I have to boot to 800 then reboot to 1104 due to the voltage issue with the
P3V4X AGP slot. There is a hard wire work around for this on the GF FAQ
page. I haven't done it because this setup has been fast and stable now
since last November.

You might investigate the voltage issue problem.

Problem with ASUS P3V4X Mobo and GPL Discovered!

by Philste » Wed, 04 Jul 2001 08:42:16

I have the same mobo and video car combo (Asus V7700) and my PC always
freezes after a while when I play GPL in D3D. I can play the sim in
OpenGL without problems, but only in 640 X 480... any higher that that,
the upper half of my monitor is black (image in move to the bottom half
and the frame rate is very slow).

PIII 866, 256 meg of PC133 RAM, Sound Blaster Live, Direct X 8.0a, 4in1
drivers 4.29a and nVidia drivers 12.41.

Problem with ASUS P3V4X Mobo and GPL Discovered!

Lannie....

Am I to assume "mine" means you have a P3V4X mobo from ASUS?

If so, are you running GPL with this (the video card is unimportant....the
AGP4X issue is an independent bug...relating to stability.....nothing to do
with the video memory reporting error bug)?  What GPL rasterizer are you
using and what screen resolution would be helpful too.  And, can you tell me
what your other BIOS mobo (only the non-standard ones) settings are....and
what 3DMark2000 scores you get with this rig?  And, how many times can you
play a standard mpeg video, back to back...... (say of about 8 mb in size)
before your system crashes?

This would be helpful info....thanks.

Problem with ASUS P3V4X Mobo and GPL Discovered!

Tom,

I'm running a Falcon Northwest system that I purchased last summer, with a
PIII-933Mhz on the Asus P3V4X Mobo... I've got a GeForce 2 GTS 64 meg AGP
card (not ultra, just the Herc 64meg first generation of G2GTS cards),  With
384 meg of 133 SDRAM and a 40 gig Maxtor HD, Soundblaster Live-X Gamer sound
card, V2 12 Meg Piggy-Back card in the 2nd slot, and 10/100 Network card and
NO PROBLEMS with GPL or anything else for that matter...

I'm running the same BIOS that came with the system last July, and GeForce
Detonator 12.90 drivers on the graphics card.

Hope this helps...

Jay....

Could you try running 3DMark2000 and tell me if it loads the first
test.....and if it runs (which I think it won't...but just in case) what
score you get.  Also, could you actually check the BIOS you are running and
tell me?

Thanks,

Okay....

Several of you report running the BIOS version 1.006 .....where are you
getting that?  Its not on the ASUS website (at least not in the standard
mobo BIOS Update section it isn't).

By the way......

I'm getting a lot of individual email from this post.....of people who have
this mobo and have exactly the same problem as I've described.....they are
not "posting" under the string I guess because they don't want to knock ASUS
or something?  Not sure why, really?

Anyway......this proves this is not an isolated case....and the fact that
this is covered in the Nvidia FAQ, seems to confirm that.

For those of you who report "no problems".....maybe you haven't tried
running 3DMark2000?  Can you do that and tell me if it still runs?

Thanks,

Tom

Problem with ASUS P3V4X Mobo and GPL Discovered!

by Jay » Wed, 04 Jul 2001 11:46:11

I'm running version 1005 of ASUS BIOS and tried to install 3DMark 2000 but
it kept crashing upon trying to install. Not run mind you, just install!!!
SO.... I'm now downloading 3dMark2001 to see if it can be installed.

When I first got my system, before I loaded TONS of racing sim's on it and
other stuff, Falcon NW provided the following benchmarks...

3d Mark 2000, a score of: 5177

Now that was about 1 year ago, and i've removed the benchmarking software
and demos that came with the system since....

At that time the Mobo BIOS was the same as it is today, but I was running
version 5.22 of NVidia's graphics drivers.

Hope that helps.
Jay J

PS: Granted a Falcon NW system, much like an Alienware is MADE for *** so
perhaps they worked out the bugs on my specific system before I even got it?

JJ

Problem with ASUS P3V4X Mobo and GPL Discovered!

Jay....don't bother with 3DMark2001.....its not meant to benchmark anything
but a GF3 card.  The "score" from it is useless for any other video card.
3DMark2000 is the correct "benchmark" for your computer.  If 3DM2000 won't
install....does it just crash...or does it give you an error message?  If
so...what message?
