Late last week I posted a problem with attempting to install GPL on a new
computer system (previously never had GPL installed on it).....and the issue
with the "ActiveMovie" warning on the GPL install. Then, when attempting to
enter a GPL track....would get the error message "Can Not Initialize
Replay....Canceling Race Weekend".....error. These two issues turned out to
be "coincidental" and not related to each other.
Over this past weekend, I decided to install a GF2 Nvidia card into this
rig.......to see if the problem might be only associated with the V5500 card
(long shot...but I was running out of good ideas to try)....and
"bingo"....out comes the problem big time! It was worse....now.... no
"video" functions on my system would work at all. All would crash,
including running 3DMark2000.
This sent me directly to the ASUS and Nvidia tech boards. After a few
hours, I discovered (in the Nvidia FAQ).....that the ASUS P3V4X mobo does
not report video memory properly through Windows 9x. It also is completely
unstable if AGP 4x is activated. So, this is why installing the GF2
card...made the problem much worse! What happens when attempting to run
GPL....is the "replay system" gets an "out of memory" call from
Windows...and then GPL aborts loading the track.
At the moment....there's no known fix for this (by me at least). Although I
have tried a few of the "suggestions"....none have worked except rebooting
Windows holding the shift key down.....then the video memory is reported
properly on start up....and the first application that uses video-based
memory will run. This must be done each time you want to run GPL.....so, in
my opinion...its not a "fix"....but a cumbersome "workaround."
The ASUS P3V4X was (is) a popular board for the P3-500 to P3-800 Intel
CPU's.....so there must be some of you running this board? I bought this
mobo several months ago (after removing my P3-800 Intel CPU in favor of
switching to AMD platforms for sim racing)......and didn't get around to
installing it in a business-ops computer until a few weeks ago. If there
has been a BIOS revision (I haven't found one) or something from VIA that
has fixed this problem....I'd sure appreciate an email from you?
Thanks in advance, for any info you can provide on the is mobo bug!

Tom Pabst
