After playing GPL for about an hour, occasionally
the screen seems to 'melt'; the best way to describe it
is as if someone let water run down a newly
painted canvas. I have never seen this before (the game also freezes up
sometimes). When I shut GPL down there is a new folder which appears in
Explorer
 called 'W' and a message that reads 'folder can not be moved as
it has been removed'.
Any ideas
I have a  PII450 with 256mbRam, 8.4GB hard drive, 2xMonster Diamond
2 3dfx cards, MSFF wheel and upto date drivers loaded.

I know Calder did some BMWs for LeMans, maybe Dali did the tracks in '67!  Same
here with respect to the effects you describe.  I take it to be overheating of
the 3Dfx chipset.
