ICR on a 386-25MHz

ICR on a 386-25MHz

Hi everybody,

I'm thinking of buying ICR.  My current system is a 386-25Mhz ( the lowest
recommended system by Papyrus) and I am wondering what features I will
lose and how realistic it will be.  I currently have F1GP and have to turn off
the texture feature for a smoother picture.  However,  I still have a blast
playing it.   Is ICR much better on a 386-25 or is F1GP a better bet on the same
system?

Thanks,
Vince

Hi Vince!

[Text deleted to get to the main point]

IndyCar Racing is more graphically intensive that F1GP; ICR has the
same solid polygonal graphics, except with bitmaps placed on the cars
and the walls.  Thus, the increase in graphics will make ICR slower
than F1GP on your computer (of course, these bitmaps can be turned
off, but then it ain't as much fun anymore *grin*).  Also, I think
Papyrus' simulation model in ICR is more complicated than the one used
by MicroProse in F1GP, so that would also make ICR slower.

So, if you're seeking good framerate over graphics, then I'd suggest
you stick with F1GP.  Heck, if your software store is very nice about
returns, give ICR a shot, and if you can't stand the framerate, return
it.

I haven't actually seen either ICR or F1GP perform on a 386-25; I'm
speaking from my personal experience of seeing both racing games on
my 486-50.  I get 25 fps with World Circuit with all graphics on except
road texture, and I get between 10-15 fps on ICR with all graphics
on except road texture, FWIW.

I've rambled enough... =)

I have a similar system, and you pretty much have to have all the
wonderful graphics turned off to have a smooth scroll.  I pretty much
don't play it these days, at least untill I upgrade to a 486 66mhz ;)

I will probably never buy another graphics game/simulation if I have only
the "minimum required" horsepower on my system.  Minimum required means,
IMO, that the manufacturer thinks that at least some of these people
won't return it for being to slow, thus they can make some additonal sales.

I'm playing ICR on a 386-25.  Turn off all the neat graphics,
decrease maximum opponents to about 4 or 5, and then go racing.  It
is really tough to drive the thing with more than 2 cars right in
front of you as the sim really starts to chunk.  I just can't wait to
upgrade so I can really play this thing.
