Nascar & 386 question

by Arze » Sun, 22 Oct 1995 04:00:00

I got a buddy who "adopted" my old 386 DX/33 system.  Has 8 meg RAM, a
generic svga board with 1 meg of video ram, soundblaster 16 with single
speed CD drive.

The problem is this.  He can't get up to speed at Talladega.  My 'dega
setup running on my 486 DX/66 with 20 meg is turning laps at about 195 -
196 mph, but the fastest lap he ran with my setup so far is somewhere
around the mid to low 192's.  He is running Nascar from the CD ROM and
has most of the graphic elements set to auto and using FM sound to
improve the frame rate.

My questions are these ... 1) Is it the machine?  if so, 2) will more RAM
help him turn faster laps? or, 3) should he just chuck the machine and
upgrade to a 486 or Pentium?

My question is which versions are you and he running?

Papyrus put out an update a while back which slowed the speeds of the
cars dramatically.. It sounds like that could be the problem here..

I am not sure, someone back me up here, but I believe the current
version is 1.2???

Frame rate does equate to speed...since you are running a slower
machine, with a slower frame rate, your speed WILL suffer...

Chances are it's just how he drives...I would wager that if you drive it'll be closer to what you get...that's just
an idea thought..it may not necesarily be true..

The machine is one step up from my 386DX25, I would suggest to turn the
graphics off rather than auto, and to cut down on the number of
competitors to around 5-9.  On my machine, ten or more opp. and auto
graphics seems to drop the frame rates to an unusable low.

My advice is to stick with the short tracks, so that you can at least
find the opposition on the track now and again. ;-)
