GPL Movie Player - installed it, now GPL won't run, even with uninstall

by Gaul » Tue, 18 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I installed the GPL Movie Player (GPLMP) and now GPL won't run.  And I mean
at all.  The first thing I tried was to uninstall GPLMP, reboot, then try
GPL again but it still wouldn't run.  After the panic subsided, I tried
reinstalling GPLMP, rebooting and trying it again. No luck.  GPLMP ran
alright, but GPL wouldn't run at all.  Got rid of GPLMP.  I then tried
uninstalling GPL (something I thought I'd never do) rebooting, reinstalling
GPL, rebooting, but still no luck.  It simply won't run at all and hangs
when started with a black screen.  I'm guessing some system file has been
changed (registry, maybe?) since GPL won't even run after being uninstalled
then reinstalled.

If anyone has an idea how to solve this, please let me know.  There is no
list of files installed with GPLMP so I can't go through and look for what
might have been changed by it (its an executable setup program). If someone
has a list of these files, I might be able to do something with it.  As it
is, GPL is the only program affected...all other programs and games seem to
work just fine.

system:
P2-400
128mb RAM
win 98
Hercules TNT1 vid card
STB Voodoo2 12mb
Aureal SQ2500 sound card (vortex2 based)
LWFF wheel

Thanks for any help you can give.  I'm sitting here with no way to play GPL
and pretty unhappy about it. I guess I should have backed up GPL, but I'd
been lucky before with all other add-ons for the game.

You could try registry restore. Get into Selective start-up ( pressf8 as if
you are going into safe mode). At C:\> type scanreg/restore. Then select a
date that is before you installed that movie player program. Hope you back
up your registry on a regular basis. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice- it was a good idea but didn't fix it.  I guess its
not a registry problem then.  I can't imagine what it could be.  I've
uninstalled GPL and GPL Movie Studio, rebooted, cleaned my registry of
references to it, but still can't get GPL to run.  It goes to a black screen
when I reinstall and try to load it.  Never happened before, and won't load
no matter what I do. I've tried a clean 1.0 version installation and a 1.2
upgrade and neither would launch.

I'm really getting worried now. Will I ever be able to race my Eagle again?

Have you tried running it in software mode to see if it's a graphics
problem?  A simple way to do this is to go into your gpl folder and
rename the file rast3dfx.dll to say rast3dfx.dlx.  This will force GPL
to run in software mode.  If that works then somehow your graphics card
drivers have been messed up.

Thanks, that was it!!  It took a reinstall of my video drivers followed by a
reinstall of DX7A to get it to work again.  Now to reload all those third
party add-ons.....
