Help! GPL won't run on Win98...

by Kevin Caldwel » Sun, 14 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I've been running GPL for months on this computer. I got greedy, and wanted
to run my 300A at 450 on a BH-6, instead of the 340 I have been running on
an LX-6. To make a very long story short, I can't get the BH-6 stable, even
at 300MHz, despite trying everything from re-formatting HDs, to buying
Win98. So back to my LX-6.

My computer is now running fine again, but I am on Win98. GPL loads, the
intro movie plays fine, but when I boot GPL. I just get a garbled G_L start
screen, and the computer locks. I didn't read all the Win98 posts here,
'cause it wasn't a problem for me at the time. Is there any way to fix this,
or do I go back to Win95?

I am running a ABIT LX-6 MB, Hercules 8Mb AGP Thriller, Celeron 300A, SB
64AWE, 3Com Ethernet card to my cable modem, 128M of NEC CAS 2 RAM, Win98,
updated Hercules drivers (th3dw085).

Help! I'm in GPL withdrawal. It's been days...

Best bet is to reinstall GPL since Gpl puts a couple of files in your
windows \system32\drivers  folder called papycpu and papyjoy. Your win 98
install probably messed up your GPL install. Other candidate could be direct
x which I had to reinstall after I changed to 98. Good luck ,some of us have
even worse problems :)

It seems weird that the 300a wouldn't run stable on the BH6, provided the
bios update was loaded to support the celeron. My bh6 didn't come with the
bios update, so i had to borrow a mates 350 PII to flash it. The celeron
should at least run at its rated speed. If this happened to me, I'd take the
board back and exchange it.

Geez, ya not having much luck<g> I've never had a garbled screen on my
300a-bh6-8mb thriller, so i'm only guessing here, but it could be worth
checking for directx prob
lems, ie certified drivers etc.

Hehe, i can't go one day without my gpl fix, so i sure do feel for ya.<g>
Good Luck, Phil

  Hi,
Re-install, GPL, Video stuff, DirectX6, Directplay, get W98/95 to do a 'check
hardware' form control panel..... make sure if you use a 3DFX card, to switch
'tripple buffering off', GPL don't like it on, screws the graphics in the
menu's!
I use GPL with W98, 200MMX, 64mb. 3DFX-II..... no problem, runs fine (well, I
could do with a few more fps with a faster PII ;-)!
Best of luck....

It's not a problem with Windows 98, as it runs fine on my system, but
probably the fact that you installed Windows AFTER installing the game.

Try re-installing GPL and the correct video drivers and let us know.
