Help: GPL won't run on XP!!

Just bought GPL the retail box version.  For some reason it won't run properly
after installation.  I can see the Sierra Sports screen and then it just goes
back to my XP desktop.

FYI, my setup:

Celeron 266
256Mb RAM
Visiontek GeForce 2 MX200 32Mb PCI graphics card
Screen resolution: 1024x768 on 32bit color

Do I need a driver or patch somewhere?

Just update GPL to version 1.2.0.1 and it will work perfectly.
www.papy.com for update file.

Yes, you need some patches: go to the developer's download site,
http://www.papy.com/framesets/downframe.htm and download and install the
following patches (I don't think order matters but this is the order I
installed them in):

1.2 patch (must be done first!)
disconnect fix
Direct3D patch

Be sure to read the "readme" files for each patch carefully.

All that being said, though, GPL is going to run quite poorly on your PC.
Your graphics card and RAM are fine but your CPU is barely strong enough to
run it. Sure you meet the minimum requirements on the box, but they were
optimistic to say the least.

If you have to shop for a new PC, what's the minimum spec you would go for to
run GPL satisfactorily?

Is Celeron 1Ghz still too slow?

No, a Celeron 1GHz should be plenty...500MHz was right about the real
minimum...

But really, if I were looking for a new computer, I would NOT even THINK
about a Celeron now.  Build a Duron 1GHz setup and get better performance
for less money.

Faster is always better but a celeron 1 ghz is plenty. It should run at an
acceptable resolution.

I was able to run it ok with a K6-2 300MHz cpu when i first got it. Too many
cars on the track would bog it down, but i could pull it off. Then i got a
K6-2 450MHz, and it was acceptable, touching 36fps here and there. A 1GHz
will run it nicely.

My wife's PC has a Celeron600 and that's the minimum I'd go.  I can see the
occaisional slowdown that I don't get on my PIII933.  1 GHz should be fine,
your video card is good.

Running the patched GPL on a Thunderbird 1 gig with 512 PC133 memory and a
GeForce2 MX400 w/64 MB.  On Windows XP Pro.  Without a hitch.  Used to run
it on an AMD K6-2 350 with 256 MB and some old video card (don't remember)
and it was "okay."  Go for a good processor and memory while it is still
within sight.

I managed to get it running but the max resolution is only 680x480.  Any idea?
Is it my CPU or something is not setup right?

Is there any patch out there that can make the graphics look more "modern"?

BTW, is it possible to play it without a wheel or joystick?  I want to use my
keyboard for now just to test the water on this game.

I suspect you haven't switched the rasterizer from Software to Direct3D7.

"modern"?

Yes, but if you're still using that Celeron 266, YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH CPU.

If you're ***ic.  You can't get any feel for it through the keyboard.

FYI many celerons 266 can be overclocked to run at 400
by changing the 66mhz bus speed to 100mhz in your bios.
An extra cooler should be installed next to the old one.

Do a search at http://groups.google.com/
for more info about overclocking the Celeron 266.
