HELP: GPL won't re-install!

by Dave Del Signor » Fri, 26 May 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

I've had GPL running fine on my system for a couple of months.  A few days
ago, I  moved all my games into a common directory, to clean up my root
directory.  I created E:\GAMES, and copied all games into it.  In the case
of GPL, I copied E:\SIERRA\GPL into E:\GAMES\SIERRA\GPL.  I then edited the
registry to point all relevant references to their new directories.  Lastly,
I edited the SIERRA.INI file in c:\windows.  This worked for every game
except GPL.

GPL would start up to the initial spash screen, then freeze.  I was able to
kill it by doing CTL-ALT-DELETE and closing the 'Papyrus Window.'  This
occurs in both 3dfx and software modes.

Accepting defeat, I uninstalled GPL and re-installed.  Same symptoms!  OK,
uninstall, then install to the old directory location, thinking perhaps
there was a registry entry I missed.  Still no joy.  Uninstall all Sierra
products, go through the registry with a fine-toothed comb to remove any
Sierra related entries.  re-install, still no go.  There seems to be nothing
I can do to get GPL back up and running.  I'm afraid that Sierra has
implemented some sort of copy protection for the game which is now hosed,
and is keeping me from installing a fresh copy.  I've sent email to Sierra,
but past experience leads me to believe I'll never get a response.

Please help!

I have a PII-350 w/ 160MB, Win98 release 2, DX 7.0a, all windows updates
applied.  Video: CL Voodoo 2 8mb, CL Riva TNT2 Ultra.  All updated drivers
as of 4/1.
Audio: Creative AudioPCI.  All updated drivers as of 4/1.
Controller: Guillemot Ferrari Force USB.  All updated drivers as of 4/1.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Dave Del Signore

Shot in the dark.....start GPL. and wait 30 minutes.....does it start
during this time, then it's a modem issue, which you can solve with
the GPL 1.2 patch (possible a CORE.INI entry needed).

Remco,

That did it!  I set:
    disable_modem = 1
in core.ini, and all my problems went away.  It turns out my modem had
wigged out on me.

Many, many thanks.

Dave
