It's been years since I've seen ras so united behind a modern F1 title as F1
2001.  Not quite everyone, but almost everyone seems to agree that it is the
best modern F1 sim around!  Amazing!

And EA will continue to refine the game franchise every year just like
they do with all their other sports titles.

Maybe I'm the lone dissenter, but I wasn't very impressed with the graphics
I saw when it was demo'ed at the USGP last month.  No, I didn't get a chance
to try it out but after buying F1 2000  then F1 2000 Championship Season the
game looked almost identical as far as graphics go.  Are the changes in
gameplay really that striking?  Is there anyone out there who can compare F1
2000 CS to F1 2001?

I think there have been a lot of problems, and people have complained
about it when it's not running right. Once the driver issues have been
sorted, everyone seems to be approving...

Rafe Mc, who hasn't even run it himself anyway :D

What is a shame is that 80% of the buyers aren't the type to scan
newsgroups, comb the internet and tweak their various .ini and .cfg files.
I can start to understand why the consoles are starting to win out, because
with a stable hardware platform to develop on, things either work or don't
work straight out of the box.

With F1CS, the automatic graphics config buried a low system rating value in
the .ini file.  The textures were of course horrible.  Manually bumping this
number up gave me a much better looking sim, at the loss of only 1 or 2 fps.
If someone didn't think to edit the file, they would wonder why the game
looks so poor.  They would also falsely assume the game is a bad product and
would shelve it.

On the other hand, the very "tweakability" makes PC sims what they are.  New
textures, edited tracks, new car models.  Wheee!

Still waiting for the F1-2001 demo before I buy it for my marginal PC.

I Bought them all, and F1 2001 is a major step up, i really wasn't that
impressed with the previous offerings.  That said F1 2001 isnt perfect. No
AI in Multiplayer and not GPL standard Multiplayer :(.  The driving model is
great IMO, which is the main thing.

All the best,
Ash

Conclusion: ISI now has the foundation for a REALLY good F1 sim.. long
live F1 2002 :)

When some patches and user made utils come out for it, then
maybe I will like it.

As it is now, I don't think it even comes close to the best modern F1
game category. (the game doesn't even have telemetry.......)

F1 2001 almost unites ras!!

by Ian » Thu, 11 Oct 2001 23:20:56

Well, after all the praise I've seen here I went out and bought F1 2001.
Installed great, fired it up went on track and got a decent framerate
Athlon 750, 25MB RAM, GeForce 2 pro). I'm not particularly impressed with
the graphics but they'll do. So off around the track, something didn't feel
right. Well I can't believe it, they've screwed up the split axis support...
again !!
Yes, split axis does work, but (and it's a big but) the pedals only work
when they've passed half way through their movement, this makes it very
difficult for me to feel how much power and brakes I'm giving to the car,
very poor. It's a shame really as it's so close to being a great sim :(

Thanks for the nice reviews and thanks to the others who also responded.  It
looks like they have improved quite a bit with this one.  Seems that EA has
me reaching for my wallet again. :-)

No, ISI didn't mess up the split axis support -- you probably haven't
configured your controller correctly.  The controller setup in F1 2001
is not as elegant as the visual displays in GPL and Viper Racing, but
you can tune the dead zone and range individually for each axis in F1
2001, so my guess is that you haven't got your controller configured
properly from the in-game controller setup menus.
