What do you all think of the GP3 AI?
I HATE the bastards! 9 out of 10 times they ram me when I cleanly
overtake them, even on long straights!
I have the feeling the AI hardly tries to avoid me when I'm driving
next to them. Even when I'm on the inside of a corner, and there's
enough space for the both of us, they just drive to the inside, taking
us both out.
I like the defensive and agressive driving of the AI, but I've got the
feeling that Surtees is driving every car in GP3!

I haven't got any problems with them. i think its cool how the go to the
middle of the track if you try to overtake them.

No problem here, only when I brake too early, or lose traction coming out
of a turn that I generally get punted, just as I would expect to be.

Cheers,
Rod.

In november last year, I posted this message:

Actually I'm not too happy about the AI in GP2.
They are too goddamn easy to pass!  In GP2, you can be a whole
carlength behind them and yet still pass them under braking
because of the timid way they act.  A real driver might stick
to the racing line, but a GP2 AI driver will hurl themselves
off the road rather than risk contact with you going into a
 corner.
The benefit from a "tow" is way too much as well.  Is there
an editor to cut this back a bit?  The reality is that if
you're just 0.1 second a lap quicker than a GP2 AI car, then
you are guaranteed to be able to get past him within a lap
 or so.

I'm glad to see that pretty much all of this has been fixed.
I especially like the way that they now defend the inside line
under braking into corners.

I dont have that problem.

AI is really great... They race you hard and fair... I did a 100% race on

how the backmarkers where making room for you... if they where in a fight
they would back off the fight and let you pass, just as in real life...
(Except for that Ricardo Tosser, man, that bastard doesn't let you by, like
he is racing for first place. Took me 2 laps once (lapped him 3 times total)
to get past him. Yup, they modelled Ricardo perfectly, very realistic :D).

Only times I crashed with an AI it was my fault, the replays proved it was
my mistake whille I thought to myself why did that bastard punt me off?...
Oh wait, it was my own mistake :)

Aggressive sons of ***es!

??? The only time I've come into collision with AI cars is when
*I* lose control... (which happens too often, so I'm not going
into that!)

Ah! You mean the Schumacher Syndrome...  ^_^  ^_^

I don't find them that bad.

I just wish Mika H didn't keep passing me...  ^_-

Only one gripe left with GP3 after 12 hours play - still can't
map keys to my LWFF buttons...  :(:(:(

Yup... I am not surprised at all. One "feature" of the GP2 AI which
I totally hated, is that on many straights they would try to ram you
if you attempted a pass. Many "normal passing" points on the
various tracks would not be a problem. I believe I joked at that
time that he has the Nascar AI all set :-)

Come to think of it, this was another niggling problem with GP2
and WOrld Circuit which I hated. It is almost like a penalty for
attempting to pass at a point where you shouldn't.

While the GP2 AI wasn't perfect at all, this is simply untrue. Oh wait,
maybe the AI knew it was you ;-)

Why has it taken so long though.  I hacked into the original Microprose
Grand Prix on my Atari 10 years ago and had them doing this.  It wasn't
difficult to code.

LOL, I just love the GP3 AI. They now take the inside before the next
corner to keep you from going inside braking late. They battle you even
after you passed them (most other AI just gives up and falls back,
remember?). I'd say, it's the most real and challenging AI in a
racing sim today.

I really don't get where you're coming from at all.  I played GP2 for 2
years and had almost no problems racing with the AI.  Certainly not on the
straights.  If anything, they were too easy to pass.  The only thing that
irked me was the way the lapped cars would sometimes try a little too hard
to let me pass, and I'd wind up running right into them.  Still on the
whole, better than any other sim I've seen.  Don't have GP3 yet, so no
comment there.

Somebody brought up the topic of the race strategy (if any)
of GP3 cars a few days ago and asked someone to try a little
experiment.   Here it is:

With one and a half laps to go, damage the front wing of the
leader.  The result is that they immediately pit to repair
the damage, and come out again in 10th place or wherever.

This is in contrast to 'real life', where the best strategy
is to continue on for that extra lap and maybe lose just a
place or two.

cheers...
P.S.  This was raised when it was noticed that the cars will
always pit to change to the 'right' tyre type depending on
weather, (no matter how few laps are left) and would NEVER
consider doing what Rubens did, and play out the final few
laps on the 'wrong' tyres.

Jeez, another easily fixable code legacy left over from F1GP. :(
