Daytona USA, originally an arcade game and now on the Sony Playstation,
was developed by Sega and Lockheed Martin.  Sega provided their ***
expertise, Lockheed Martin developed the necessary hardware, and my
company helped create the textures and models used in the game.  It is, of
course, not a serious simulation like NASCAR or INDYCAR II; but the arcade
version can not be matched for shear fun and great looks.

A washed out friend of mine has been bugging me about the merits of some kind
of arcade game named DAYTONA USA. He claims it to be the ultimate driving
experience short of actually buying a real car and go out at Road America.
Does anyone have any experience with that game? How does it compare with
WCF1, Indycars, Nascar simulations etc. Cheers, gfg

Daytona USA is an AWESOME game.  It's more of a simulator than Need
For Speed, and more of an arcade game than NASCAR.  I play it whenever
I find myself at an arcade (not much nowadays).  It's cool because you
can do burnouts, flips, and when you crunch a wheel, the car wobles.
Cool smoke and crashes too.  I REALLY hope it comes out for PC soon.

I certainly hope you are not offended.  Some of us, myself included, have
been rough on the game.  I think the frustration comes from the fact that
Sega has chosen an exclusive copyright on the speedway which precludes those
of us who truly enjoy the Papyrus sim from having access to the legendary
Daytona.  It seems to be nothing more than a powerplay.  I also am upset
that Sega would not even respond to my correspondence.  Obviously to them I
am not worth a reply.  I won't forget that.  I promise.
IMHO we Papyrus sim fans are upset about the politics and also from being
kept out of a Nascar racing Icon.  It's not about you or your efforts.

The main thing about that game (and The new one Indy500 who seems to
be basee on the same engine?) is the steering feedback. When you hit another
car or a wall or when you turn a sharp bend, you 'feel' it throuhgt the
steeting. The graphics are beautifull and the frame rate is verry smooth
(probably 30fps). As for the physics model (tyre grip, etc...) i dought they
have anything to do with the real thing.

So if you have a chance to try one of those DaytonaUSA or Indy500, go for it,
i'm sure you'll have a good time!

I wish someone would do a REAL RAC Rally game for the PC in the style of Sega Rally. Just
imagine... 40 different tracks to race around [or thereabouts] including forest, tarmac,
mud, gravel, sand stages as well as snow, rain, night and foggy conditions.
There would also be the chance to drive a Subaru Impreza, instead of just being stuck to
the Toyota Celica and the out-of-date Lancia Delta. Drving a Cosworth would be funky too!
Now THAT would be cool!

Yeah, if only a p100 had a ghost of a chance of reproducing even the shitty
Saturn version.  Hey, no hidden agendas here.  I have a Saturn, a
Playstation, and a P133 w/ a Matrox Millenium.  Of the 3, the p133 is
definitely the weakest on graphics power.

Heck, we wasted tons of $$ up at Reno, Nevada playing Daytona in 4-player
mode. Lotsa fun! Handling isnt what I'd call realistic, but hey, fun is fun..
I like Screamer much better, but I dont have any car/computer friends who want
to try it networked. All my computer friends like RPGs. And all my car
friends have no idea as to how a computer works. Go figure.

SEGA is converting many of thier Saturn titles to PC.  But you'll
need a 3d card and Win95 to get them to run.

What would be cool is to have a true road rally.  Something that simulates
a real cross country trip.  Snow, rain, night, day, headlights, traffic,
cops, the whole thing!!

Just out of curiosity, has anyone out there managed to beat 2min 19sec
for the beginners course of this game? (arcade version)

I only played it once and did not notice the time.   I was racing this
'kid' and being careful around the corners like in Papryus NASCAR
Racing while the aforementioned 'kid' kept pounding into me from
behind.   He beat me.  :-(   Stupid arcade game!

Craig.
