Has anybody played the new Daytona USA Nascar simulator from Sega, it is
an arcade game only.

If you haven't played it yet, go do it now.  It is built around the virtua
racing engine, and the graphics are amazing, you have a choice of three
different tracks and the realism is unreal.  Go play this game now.

Can't say specifically where in Chicago... just go to the arcade or mall
entertainment center that usually has the latest and newest games available.
Also, chances are good that if you've driven Virtua Racing at an arcade, the
new Daytona will be there now too.

Good luck,

Ralf Southard

I'll have to disagree with you there.. while the graphics are very good, it is
obvious that the realism level is very low. It is just like any of the other
arcade video games, car flies off the road, flips, and 2 seconds later your in
the middle of the screen again, if you say thats realistic I'd like to see your
idea of fantasy.

Never having driven a NASCAR car I can't vouch for the accuracy
of the driving model. It is fun tho to get the car sideways thro
the corners, and have it squirl about under heavy breaking. I don't like
the way it lets you go from 4th gear to 2nd without the engine over-revving.

I just wonder how popular a game would be if, after crashing, it
said "you are dead: game over". Personally I think it should.

The worst aspect of this game, and possibly the MOST realistic,
it that it costs a fortune to play; $1 a pop.

My idea of fantasy is playing a racing car sim with a joystick :-).

As far as car handling goes I prefered Ridge Racer.  Unfortunately you can
sideways skid your way through any cars that are next to you (or so it seems).
I don't think Sega did as much with the force-feedback steering as
they could as well.  If you had Atari's Hard Drivin's use of force feedback,
Ridge Racers car handling & Daytona's collision detection and graphics
engine then things would be much better.  Add to that Hard Drivin's realism
and you would have a game really worth playing, IMHO.

I thought the handling in Virtu Racing was good, but what I feel really
screws up the realism is the ~ 20% extra horsepower you get when you're not in
the lead. And this definitely isn't simulating a drafting effect. I think it
makes it so that almost anyone can win. Is DAytona like this?
