GPL: Improve FPS?

by Nichlas Ingemarsso » Thu, 03 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I have at last bougth a rendition-card, and its an unbelieveble improvment
compared with my old card.
But I am only getting 25 fps and I will ask what I shall do to improve it
even more?
I have an Pentium 200 and 32 mb Ram.
Shall I buy a Pentium II(expensive), more Ram or a Voodoo 2?

I know that a Pentium 2 would make a HUGE difference b/c i do not have a 3dfx
or Renditoin card but i do have a P2 333mhz  w/ 32MB RAM. I can only manage
13-15 FPS with out the 3d card (which i hope to get soon) but on my older
system (Pentium 200mhz 40MB RAM) i only get 8-10 FPS.  I woulfd have to say
this is a large improvement but its to be expected.  If you dont want to spend
the money on a P2 (yes they are expensive), max out your RAM.  I dont however
know how much of a boost this will be.

P.S.   I would be very happy with 25 FPS.  My laptimes would probably go down
considerably.

Nichlas,

from all I read here, a V2 card would be overkill for your current
system. Rendition cards supposedly are the best choice for slower
computers regarding GPL.

A bit more RAM won't hurt, definitely. 32MB is the minimum for GPL -
another 32 or 64MB of RAM will make Windows faster and allow bigger
replays. I upgraded from 32 to 96MB recently, and the computer as a
whole is much smoother now. But it didn't affect the framerate in GPL
too much.

You didn't mention explicitly what Rendition card you bought. If it is
a 8MB card with a 2x00 chipset, there is no need to get another
graphics card for GPL. The older 4MB models are considerably slower,
I've been told.

You could try overclocking your CPU, or buy a new CPU and mainboard.
Conventional wisdom has it that a Celeron 300a in an Abit BH6 board is
the best combination regarding speed and price.
