N4 : load track times

Hi

I wonder if there is anyway the loading time
for the various track be improved.

It takes a very long time to load up these
tracks and especially painful if you would like
to do a few tries to improve your qualifying time.

I already have 320mb ram, so that should take care of
the available rams.

Is there some compression / decompression software
that could help ???

The old Nx tracks were smaller and everything was pretty much
un-compressed inside the .dat files.  But from what I've heard around here,
the N4 .dat files are compressed with lots more 'stuff' stuffed inside.   So
the loading time for N4 is due to the need to uncompress the dat file.
My only idea for this would be to use a dat-extracting  program and take
all the files OUT of the .dat file.  Then each track folder would be full
size, taking up much more hard drive space, and the track, at least in my
theory, would then load faster because there would be no need to uncompress
them.
HOWEVER,  I doubt it would be that easy.  Most likely the whole program
would crash if the dat file was laid out in the track folder.

If you are using 5400rpm drives on a 66MHz bus, yea they would probably take
longer to load.
Partition your drives if they are large to get some speed increase.

Wonder if anyone has experimented with running N4 off of a RAM Drive

I noticed an improvement when I upgraded to ATA 100 HDs and added RAM for a
total of 512MB. Watkins Glen & Sears Point are now the only tracks that
takes more than 10-15 seconds to load. This is in an AMD 1.2Ghz based
system.

Just to add my 2p, I just yesterday upgraded my CPU,board and RAM to an AMD
1.4Ghz, 256mbDDR2100, from an AMDk6-2-500 with 224mbPC100 RAM, while
retaining my old 20gb 5400rm ATA66 drive.

N4 tracks load "almost instantly" now- same hard drive, masses more CPU
power.

cheers

While you are happy with your upgrade, this system would be even better
with a faster hard drive, which is now it's "crutch". Just an
observation. :)

On no, don't start using that philosophy :)  If you do, you will be
upgrading every week since there will always be one piece that is the
"crutch" :)

Oh ya! Im with ya, most circle tracks load almost like a Windoze app, very
quickly. I just wanted to be certain that folks knew that the RC's do take
just a while longer.

load times and CPU link ???

almost too bizarre to accept

HDs and added RAM for
the only tracks that
