N4 Won't Load No Matter What

Hi,
I finally convinced a good friend to buy Nascar 4 so that we could race
against each other, but it absolutely will not load on his computer.  He's
running Win2k on a dual PIII Iwill motherboard and has 256megs of ram and an
80 gig hard drive.  It installs just fine, but as soon as it goes to run, it
will just spin up the cd and then do nothing else.  This happens whether it
is the unpatched or patched version.  He has a raid controller on his
computer, but he's not using it and it's not the brand that everyone
reported having trouble with (he has an AMI I believe).  Any ideas?  It
won't even load the 3d config utility.

How about the N4 server, same problem?

I'd tell you to download a CD crack, but my Win2K setup refuses to recognize
any I've found as valid Win32 applications. To run the game requires a
reboot into Win98.

We haven't tried the server setup, but it's frustrating that it won't even
try to load.  Does the game need to be on a separate partition to work
correctly with N4?

Sounds like the problem is the crappy copy protection on the cdrom. Either
use a no-cd cdrack or your friend will have to buy a new cdrom drive that
doesn't have any problems reading copy protected cdroms.

I am not so sure. Shouldn't you be able to do the 3D Config even with the
copy protection? He said he can not even do that

Well now it will run the 3d config, but only if you select it from the start
menu.  When you fun the game for the first time, it still won't even get to
the 3d config program before it quits.

It is a remote possibility the long names were shortened and the game will
not play...here is a batch file that should fix the problem if that is yer
problem...i will offer it in  two ways...as an attachment if you trust me,
just put this file into your N4 directory and run it...if you dont trust me,
copy the below info and save it as a batch file in your N4 directory and run
it yourself....

rename "NASCAR~*.exe" "NASCAR Racing 4.exe"
rename "Sierra~*.dll" "SierraUpN4Res.dll"
rename "rendse~*.dll" "rendserver.dll"
cd paintkit
rename "n4paint~*.rsc" "n4paintkit.rsc"
cd ..

echo RENAME SUCCESSFUL!!

hope this helps ya

begin 666 n4rename.bat

It's an HP DVD/CD-RW combo drive, I'll give him one of my old ones and see
if it will work ok with that.
