Problem with DirectX / 3dFX / Win98

I've been having problems with my 3dFX games for the last week. The problems
are:

Grand Prix Legends:  Sierra Sports screen is cropped,
and then the game exits to Windows
Jedi Knight:  when I start/load a level, I hear music but see
nothing and then am booted to Windows
F1 Racing Simulation:  game looks OK, but sound is bad and maybe
some flickering of background graphics (trees)
QuakeGL: get wglCreateConnect failed error, and then exits to
           Windows
Shadows of the Empire: crashes with blank screen, needing reset

The funny thing is that all was fine one day, then I found these problems
the next day. I had these games up and running successfully for months
prior. Everything was fine after installing Win98 and the multimedia update
(DX6 etc), and I didn't install anything else, so I don't think it is that.
I did have problems shutting down the computer for a week prior (various
errors after the shutting down screen). Non-3DFX games work just fine. I
tried reinstalling DX6 and got the latest 3dFX drivers (Caopus Pure 3D), to
no avail. HELP...please! What else can I try, short of re-installing Win98?

My system specs:
 Pentium 200 MMX
 Canopus Pure 3D 3DFX card
32 MB RAM (now 64, but didn't help)
 Windows 98
Installed Multimedia Update, also tried standalone DX6

Try copying your Glide2x.ovl file to all the main directories of your games.
The file should be in C:\windows\system\
