GPL Lockup?

I'm using V1.2.0.1 of GPL, with a Voodoo 3DFX card. Sometimes when using
GPL, I get the video locking up on me, the race carries on regardless, I can
hear
the AI cars pass me as I ding the barrier 'cos the picture stopped moving!

Other times the graphics go very trippy, I've even had giant heads with
helmets and
goggles floating in the sky at Spa! Did anyone put LSD in the pit lane
drinks cooler in 1967?

The problem was worse before I upgraded to V1.2, but is still there.

Anyone been there, done that, fixed it?

This happens because of a, possibly heat related, problem with the memory on
the V3. It used to occur quite often with "Diamond" cards (both V2 and
V3's). If extra cooling on the car helps then great, but otherwise it's time
for a new video card.

Possibly, you installed more graphics than fit the memory on the V3?

If your motherboard has an AGP slot, a cheap and cheery GF3 beckons loudly,
I think.

Wish I knew what an AGP slot was! You may be right about the V3's
memory, I think I overdid it at Spa, had enhanced cars, track textures, sky,
everything. Just binned all the track fx, a long parctice and no probs other
than
slow cars dawdling on line, start of race though and it locked again. Cant
bear to
part with new Ferrari, maybe Eagle and Hondas extras may reluctantly
have to go!

Try underclocking the card, if it is heat-related that will show it up.
There are overclocking utilities or you can enable the clock slider display
tab with a simple registry edit.

I have a Voodoo3 3000 in one of my machines. To enable the overclocking tab
copy & paste the following text into notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\3dfx Interactive\3dfx
Tools\Installed\Tools\{AB040305-8AA1-11D2-8DD1-00104BB5EAD6}]
"CompleteRegistration"=dword:00000001

and save the file somewhere as V3_overclock.reg. Double click the file to
merge it into your registry.
I recommend you back up your registry first in case of problems, although
I've used this in win98 myself.
If you're using win2k or XP it may not work though, I've never tried.
I think all you need to do is change the first line to REGEDIT5 instead
though.

If you're not sure about creating the .reg file yourself, mail me (watch the
'typo') & I'll send it to you. It's only 1kb.

Yep. I had the exact same problem on my Diamond V2.

If extra cooling on the car helps then great, but otherwise it's time

Well, you can also 'underclock' the card in the Monitor settings or the
registry, that worked for me. After switching to a 12 MB V2 the crashes
were gone at higher clock speed, btw, so it does seem like a
Diamond-related issue.
