upon starting GPL and running 1 lap to see if new sys works, all is
well until...car setup, go to reduce fuel load, press 'save as' and as
soon as i type a name the entire sys seizes. i can't cntl-alt-del, i
cant even restart with power button! i must shut off the power to
clear it.
i have a 500m p3- 256m ram
this happens whether i am online or not.
any ideas?

Well a general rule of thumb is that if you can cntl-alt-del it is
a software problem. If you cannot cntl-alt-del it is a hardware
problem/conflict.

I had a similar prob, and removing the Your__Name folder from the players
folder and then setting up a new player solved it. (NO idea why, but as soon
as I put it back in it locked again)
Remember to backup your setups
