I got this somewhere. Sorry to the author, I've forgotten. It works for me.
======
I did make gpl demo work on windows 98 RC0 using this method:
1. Unpack the gpldemo.exe to c:\gpl using winzip.
(Dont run the file)
2. Copy wininet.dll from c:\gpl to c:\gpl\program
3. Make c:\gpl\options.ini writable
4. edit c:\gpl\options.ini second line to last config used
according to your 3d card. I use rast3dfx.dll.
5. Make c:\gpl\options.ini read only.
6. Make c:\gpl\program\controls directory
7. Start the game. Calibrate joystick before racing.
I have to delete the files in the c:\gpl\program\controls
directory before starting the game, otherwise it will hang.
So every time I have to do joystick calibration.
Hope this helps

"A lot of people think racing is about going fast. But it's not. It's about going just slow enough to stay on the track."

Remove us here and there to mail me.
Ive tried the demo on 3 W98 machines and in all cases the sound was high
pitched and the car was too fast and twitchy to drive. It went so fast that
you could not get it out of 2 nd gear.
If any one has the solution pass it on.
