GPL Lockups -Sierra's reply

by OldManWa » Wed, 23 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Thought everyone would be interested in reading reply from Sierra about
GPL lockups , so here is my message back to them there message to me and
then
my first message to them

Thanks for the information and suggestions on my problem running GPL.
To answer the first part of suggestion here is a copy of my autoexec.bat
file

REM Environment Settings For McAfee VirusScan
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1
Rem,"Added for Voodoo2"
set SST_GRXCLK=90
set SST_FT_CLK_DEL=0x4
set SST_TF0_CLK_DEL=0x6
set SST_TF1_CLK_DEL=0x6
set SST_VIN_CLKDEL=0x1
set SST_VOUT_CLKDEL=0x0
set SST_TMUMEM_SIZE=2

as you can see I am setting the speed of my Voodoo2 to 90  mhz
to your second suggestion for using the reference drivers from 3dfx
using Glide 2.53 drivers from this is the only way that I can keep GPL
from locking up, if I use the Glide 2.54 drivers GPL will lockup . I
already
have a fan blowing on my Voodoo2 cards and the Pll33 also has a fan, I
really don't think it is a over heating problem, this was the same
suggestion
the company that made Unreal gave for there software problem. Thanks
for your help and I am looking forward to being able to play GPL without
having to coping the Glide 2.53 drivers each time I want to play then if I
want to Play your other game half-life I have too copy the Glide 2.54
drivers
back . People in the news groups will also be glad to know that Sierra is
working on this problem, so I will post this reply to all the 3dfx news
groups.
Yours truly
Ken Brown

GPL Lockups -Sierra's reply

by Krilli » Wed, 23 Dec 1998 04:00:00

This doesn't set the clockrate at 90 its done by the registry or if u use
monsters slider its done by sliding the bar they provide although if u use
reference drivers u need to edit the registry :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\3Dfx Interactive\Voodoo2\D3D\SSTV2_GRXCLK
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\3Dfx Interactive\Voodoo2\Glide\SSTV2_GRXCLK

U should be able to find all the other settings that u need to modify there
to..

if u want to increase the overclocking of the panel that diamond (or any
other manufacturer) provides u need to edit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Diamond\Monster 3D II\panel\PERFMAX   and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Diamond\Monster 3D II\panel\PERFMIN

GPL Lockups -Sierra's reply

by Gambler » Wed, 23 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I run the glide 2.54 drivers from Diamonds site <12-1-98 version>
with win 98 and have NEVER had problems with the GPL game locking up
at all . I ran the 3dfx reference drivers and later the direct6 drivers also
with no problems before
updating the drivers . Of course I dont have the SLI setup you mention but
the reference drivers
for the sli from 3dfx were fine with my teammates when they ran it .
the problem may be something else . perhaps the 2d and 3d cards <3dfx> arent
set on the same
refresh rate in windows that can cause lockups . Of course results may vary
, but just wanted to toss
some ideas at you guys rather than see you wait around for a fix

I really hope that they solve this soon, as it has been months now!

GPL Lockups -Sierra's reply

by Iain Mackenzi » Thu, 24 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Thanks for that, but it has nothing to do with refresh rates as all other
software works OK.
Not everyone has the 'lock-up' problem, but most people do and it is
definitely the DX6 V2 drivers, as going back to the release DX5 V2 drivers
solves the problem.

GPL Lockups -Sierra's reply

by Jeff Sharp » Fri, 25 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Not true in my case. Going back to the DX5 V2 drivers only allowed me to
play longer before the lockups start occurring. It may be that the DX6
drivers make an existing problem worse.

Jeff,
You are the first person I have heard of having the problem, with the
release DX5 V2 drivers. Maybe it's a different problem?

I'm having the lock up problems too, with Dx5 drivers.

Is it the same lockup problem? i.e. is it on the menus after about 15-20
secs after loading?

GPL Lockups -Sierra's reply

I had the same problem and tracked it down to the glide2x.dll version 2.54
file in the windows system directory. Simply swapping this file only for the
2.53 version before running GPL and swapping it back afterwards allowed me
to run all games - not the ideal solution but at least it was only one file
that needed to be changed which can easily be set up in a batch file to
launch GPL. This using 3DFX reference DX6 drivers. Worked for me on 12MB
Orchid Righteous II running in SLI.

Have since changed drivers and am using the Monster drivers (file
M3Dii203.exe dated 11/11/98) which, although glide 2.53, allows me to run
GPL and Half Life (and Thief, ***2, Quake2 etc.) without problems. Don't
know if this will help but I'm happy.

First post so I hope it's OK.

Spook
