Steve, we feel your pain (I just read through your ten or so
messages in the last few days).
Do note though, that on the bottom of the box, minimum requirements
include an 8x CD-ROM (and you've stated your CD is sub-8X). In the
past I've thought a CD-ROM speed requirement was hokey, probably just
so the customer doesn't get impatient with an older, slower drive.
After all, if you only use it to install, once the program's on your
HD, it doesn't matter if your CD is 1X or 100X, right? Well, in this
case, with the SecuROM CD protection, maybe, just maybe, they really
*mean* that an 8X CD is a true *requirement*.
It seems a bit silly to have to buy a new CD-ROM just to "play a
game" (when your old one works fine otherwise). OTOH, it isn't the
first or last time we'll buy hardware just to run the latest sim. And
you're lucky, since it's only a $40 or so purchase and you got five
years or so of use out of your old CD-ROM (which is a great lifetime
for any piece of computer equipment nowadays).
As far as the new one working, I doubt it will be a problem, since
it seems to be primarily newer CD-RWs and DVDs that have the problem,
not plain old dumb CD-ROMs. Just in case, are there any local stores
that don't charge a restocking fee? (We've got Best Buy, Circuit
City, and CompUSA and they all stick it to you. :( )
Good luck. And see you on the track. :)
