GPL Lockups - Help Pls !!

by Jean-Francois De Rudde » Sun, 23 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I have just switched from my old PI 200 MMx to a Celeron 400, I have kept my
Matrox Millenium, Voodoo I Combo but have upgraded my SB 16 to a Monster Sound
MX300. Copying the game from one HD to the other got GPL to refuse to start, so
I re-installed, and since then, I have not managed to clock 1 lap !! It first
start alright (great frame rate!!), then I see funny lines starting to apper top
left and generally 10 secs later, the whole thing bombs on a Page Fault on
GPL.EXE.... I have tried everything, from running software rendering, which
bombed the game as soon as the***pit appeared to installing original drivers
for the voodoo, the latest one and even the generic one from 3dfx. I have also
tried the very latest driver for the Monster Sound...Nothing works! I have tried
to disable the sound by putting the volume to zero, but to no avail. I am
running out of ideas and getting extremely frustrated. If anybody has got an
idea as to what I should try next, I would be extremely grateful. By the way,
quake II and other Glide games run perfectly... BTW2, I can't see a CORE.INI
anywhere, is it normal ???

Thanks a million

Try lowering the refresh rate on your display settings in windows.  I
had mine set to high and I saw some funny lines down the middle of the
screen and had lots of crashes.  I lowered the refresh rate and things
smoothed out
just a guess though
good luck

try this-
Click Start-Settings-Control Panel. Open the Multimedia applet, In the
Playback section, click Advanced Properties-Performance, then lower
the Hardware Acceleration to the next to lowest setting. This problem
did not exist for me until installing the latest MX300 drivers (still
a beta) and this cured it. BTW, the same thing happens to me in WW2
Fighters and Starsiege without applying the "fix".
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks for the clue, I think you might be right. having built this PC from scratch, I
didn't know where the crash could come from but removing the Monster Sound card did
cure the problem. So I would say you must have the solution. Thanks a million ...

PS to all 'not that impressed ' with GPL: I was one of them, running on a PI 200 MMX
and Voodoo I. It didn't feel completely controlled, too easy to lose it and of course
the colors were very dull and I had very little detail to get the FPS above 15. Well
now I am running a Celeron 400, still with my voodoo I and I can say something, this
is another game altogether : Brillant frame rate (37 fps), superb colors, garphics
and details and most important, this is the closest it feels from being in a race
car... GREAT GAME !!!

Hi Chris,

I have a similar problem, but when I open the Multimedia applet,  I
cannot find any Advanced Properties-Performance settings anywhere.  Am I
really going blind, or have I missed something, and no need to be rude
either :-)  Thanks.

I know it sounds odd but this happened to me when I overclocked the CPU.

Handy.

Open the Multimedia applet in the Control Panel. Click Advanced Properties (in the playback
section) then decreases the Hardware Acceleration. Aplly the changes, close all open programs

Thats fine if you have Advanced Properties in the playback section.  I
can't find it.  Is this in win98 or 95??  or am I just blind or
something??  If I open up the multimedia applet in control panel, I get
the 5 sections;
Audio (which has playback & recording but no advanced properties)
Video
MIDI
CD Music
& Advanced (which has no where of adjusting Hardware accel.)

What am I doing wrong??????

Please also email me a copy of the response as I don't seem to get all
newsgroup replies.  Thanks
