XP CDROM problems

OK, maybe some of you have seen this.

I have a 48XCDROM and a CDRW drive as well as my HD and ZIP drive. I am
using all four IDE devices.  When I installed XP, the 48X worked great.
However, now that XP is installed and running, the 48X is not accessible.

It shows up in explorer and when you click on it, it says to insert the
disc.  If I boot in safe mode it reads disk just fine. If I boot with a 98
boot disk and run the CDROM utilities, it works great.  Once I boot into
regular XP mode, nothing.

The CDRW works fine.  I uninstalled Nero, CloneCD & ClonyXXL.  Tried all the
patches on the newsgroups. Nothing.

Any ideas? I can no longer play NR2k2 since I removed my CDRW until the new
one arrives in a week or two. (sold the original)

Lannie

PS I've been without my 48x for 8 months now. Tried 7 other spare drives I
have lying around. Same thing on all of them.

Just a shot but have you tried putting the CDRom on the same IDE controller
that the CDRW was on? If it works it still wouldn't cure the long term
problem, but would get you by for now.

Another thought. Just for kicks, try booting with a cd in the drive and see
if it helps.

Yes, I've tried every Salve/master combination on both controllers.  It's a
known bug in XP, but non eof the current fixes works for me.

"Lannie Schafroth"
(snippage)
You can play  Nr2k2 OFFline with a nocd patch available at theuspits and
other places.  Cain't help ya with the XP problems since I'm still using the
out-of-favor win98SE.

You'd thing a service pack would fix that kind of stuff instead of busting
crackers.

My first guess would be that you have some CDR software interfering.

If you have installed, and then uninstalled, any CDR software recently I
would look there first.

It seems that many CDR packages don't remove their driver re-directors from
the registry properly (Upperfilter/Lowerfilter entries).

Adaptec EasyCD Creator is one culprit, and so is Stomp's.

This is why I like Nero.  Nero treats your system as hands-off as possible
and doesn't***with stuff.

What is this known bug you are talking about, I've NEVER seen any mention of it anywhere?  You may
just have a cdrom drive that can't deal with the securom technology on the disk.  And your comment
about never running N2002 off-line, how did you establish your baseline setups b4 getting in
everyones way on-line?  Anyone with any respect for others must run some off-line at least when it
was new just  to get used to the driveing model and new setups, etc...

Sounds similar to the problems people were having with Nero, before the 5.5
version.  It was adding Registry entries that hosed the drives, and the
solution was to remove those entries.  I found info on this at Microsofts
site I believe.  The entries are something about upper limits and lower
limits.

Buy now that I think about it, the drives wouldn't even show up in Windows
Explorer with that problem.

I had the same problems from Nero until they released a version compatible
with XP.

I am using the latest version of Nero.  I've uninstalled all CDR software,
tried the upper/lower buffer fix, uninstalled the IDE controller,
uninstalled the CDROM drives.  Nothing work.  The drives work great in Safe
Mode but not in a regular mode.

If your drive works in Safe Mode but not Normal Mode, it's obviously a
driver issue. We've seen in our shop some CDRW's won't work with a hard
drive slaved to them, but ONLY on Intel D850E boards. They work fine if a
CD's slaved to them. I see that you've "tried every slave/master
combination, but no luck."
I'd like to know about the "known bug" you mention; I install XP on nearly a
daily basis and except for the aforementioned CDRW/CD problem, it's worked
just fine.

Hmmm....  You still have something interfering there, but I don't know what
it is...

Have you installed any Microsoft "Hot Fixes" related to CDR drives?  If so,
try removing them.
