same here, fresh install. don't know about the upgrade. never tried it.
other SB Live users report very bad sound in some other games. some games
work o.k. ( N4 is the only i tried and is ok ).

I also had some sound problems with SB live , but in Win98.
The engine sound was like stears. . . strange steps up and down.
I think the problem was the settings in windows, modem and other settings
wit sounds.
What device to use etc.

I can't remember what my permanent fix was, but I've got a feeling it
sorted itself out after a reboot while it was set to 0. No driver
change either. Go figure.
