Very odd GPL and win XP sound problem

by Olav K. Malm » Fri, 18 Jan 2002 19:03:24

I've read about other sound problems with GPL and windows XP, but I
still haven't found any mention of my problem.

Sometimes the sound work ok, but sometimes when re-entering a session
the sound goes wrong and stays that way.

What I mean with wrong is : The engine sound is muffled and weird. Not
distorted, but kind of "not of this world" It's like only a few
components of the engine sample gets through. But the funny thing is
that the skidding sounds and crash sounds remains ok, so does the wind
sound. And no, it is still the original gpl.exe with the 1.2 patch and
cpu patch. Not modified.

It works wonders in WinME, but the 95/98/ME os'es suck so much that I
don't want to use it. GPL and F1 2001 are the only reasons i use winME
now. F1 2001 because of my MSFF (gameport) and F1 2001's split axis
problem.

My system:
amd xp1600
epox 8kha+ mb
512 mb ddr ram
sb live player 1024 (i guess this one is to blame)
elsa geforce3 ti200 (at gf3 speed)

I had exactly the same thing - dumped the SB Live (platinum flavour) and got
a Hercules Game Theater XP.

All the problems have disappeared.

Creative Labs are quickly becoming the ATI of sound cards.  Nice hardware -
shame about the drivers

Hi Olaf,

I had the same problem with my Audigy.
Try to reduce the sound hardware acceleration to minimal. That solves this
problem for me.

Use the dxdiag tool to make this change. Just execute the program dxdiag,
select the sound tab and set hardware acceleration
to minimal (or off).

I hope this will help you.

Cheers,

Uli

I have a similar problem.
When I reenter the track in a training session the engine sound is
distorted. (and only the engine sound)
I have found that it is the replay that seems to mess up. If I pause the
replay (or pause the entire training session) the engine sound is back to
normal.

It is the same with both original sounds and add-on sounds.

Any ideas why?

(BTW I'm using W2K and GPL 1.2.0.2 (I have a SB Live! 5.1) )

I had a SBlive as well and had the same problem :( also crackling sounds
in Nascar 4. My solution, I bought a Turtle beach Santa Cruz card and it
works perfectly, sounds better, and I swear I picked up a few FPS to boot.
It will be along time before I buy another Creative Labs product.
