General help, please - GPL, XP, Sound etc...

by Rick Catto » Fri, 23 Aug 2002 23:09:38

Wonder if anyone can help with this one;

System: P4 2.2, 512Mb, G4 4200 Ti, Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo 2
digital, Win XP.

Got this lot together in the last few weeks, but wasn't prepared for the
teething troubles. In particular, I'm wondering why I spent 50 on the
s/card, since I have to disable h/ware acceleration at the control panel to
keep most stuff running. GPL has recently started fooling about - loses
sound when changing down, loads of crackles/static when in traffic, and
seemingly some slowdown on certain tracks - Monza coming through the Lesmos
is a notable one.

I've tried the usual route of ensuring I'm up to date with drivers, although
the most recent Hercules drivers seem to have the 'Midi' tab missing and
didn't show any improvement to me...the helpline was also pretty dismal.
I've also never had the confidence in XP that most people seem to have -
don't get me wrong, I'm sure it is more stable for lots of you, but I've
been getting lockups from day 1.

Finally, GPL is patched and added-to in abundance - is it possible to return
the sound in particular to the defaults?

Or should I just reformat c:, (games etc are on separate physical drive d:)
and go back to ME or even 98?

Thanks for reading this far, and any advice will be much appreciated.

Regards,

Rick.

I had similar problems with XP. For the sound crackling/static in traffic
problem got to Volume controls and turn Wave/Direct Sound volume and Play
Control/Master volume down to 3/4 then adjust volume with your speakers
volume controls. I could never fix the slow down problem sorry which is why
i went back to win98se.

I too could never fix GPL & XP.  There are some good threads on the subject
on the message boards at www.gplea.org, but in the end, I ended up using
Partition Magic and created a dual-boot system with Win98SE just for GPL &
XP for everything else.  It works like a charm.

What mobo and chipset (the Northbridge chipset is important...not the
Southbridge)?

So you spent 1 to 200 dollars on XP...then had to buy another 70 dollar
program just so you could put a previously working program BACK ON your
system.   Why am I NOT getting this????

When I set up my new computer last December I set it up as a dual boot with
XP Pro and Win 98.  The idea being any programs that gave me problems in XP
would get installed to 98.

It's been a year and there are no apps/games on my 98 partition; and this
macine is 98% a game machine.  (been a game *** since the 8080/6502
days).

No problems at all with GPL or any of its addons.  I've been very lucky.
Maybe it has something to do with being an all Intel machine (P4 1.8) but
I've been very happy with XP Pro.

I keep 98 around because . . . well you never  know.   :o)
