XP and N4 fps problems

With WinME, I used msconfig to do a selective startup for running N4 and GPL
and process only the system.ini files.  This freed up resources so my fps were
acceptable.  But with XP, if I do a selective startup I lose sound and
controllers.  

Anyone know a workaround for this?
