Check out a BIOS update before even attempting to dual-boot with XP, and back down the hardware acceleration, if you can get to it. Is anything over-clocked on this system? Once XP is in place on the hard drive, without the Win9x line being on the first partition, it is difficult to set up the dual booting. It is much easier to wipe the hard drive, install Win9x on the first partition followed by XP. The order of install should always be the oldest first, even if triple booting. It can be done, but manipulating the boot system is tough.
