N4 loses lots of fps with XP

This is true for me, 1 ghz, 512 ram, gforce2 ultra.
I use WINme.  I run MSCONFIG, then Selective Startup, then Process System.ini.
This shuts down all non-essential things in the background and I get 40+ fps
with N4.  This is with 50 percent world detail, 43 cars, 12 look ahead and 3 in
back.
But I installed XP and found that if I ran MSCONFIG, etc., then I ended up with
no sound and no controller.  So I had to run in a normal XP environment and I
got 20-25 fps.  Enditall didn't make that much of a difference, either.
I wish I could use XP, but it just totally wrecks N4.  Same is true for GPL.

What drivers you using for your GeForce?  I'm using 12.90's & I've seen
an framerate increase going from 98SE to XP.  The default drivers for
nVidia suck in XP.  :-)

I have run 21.83, 21.85, and now 21.88 on a GeForce3 and XP. It's faster for
me too. It seems to me on my PC that OpenGL is faster than DirectX.

No problems here...

AthlonXP 1800+, GeForce Ti500.  Pulling close to 100fps at 1280X1024 with
everything maxed out.

I don't reboot or close any stuff down that always runs (Norton Anti virus,
some small utilities that run on the task bar).

It's always a good idea to kill off background tasks before playing games.
I don't bother with the Task Manager stuff, I just kill what's in the System
Tray.

That's been enough for me for the last year or so as the computers have
become so powerfull it's hard to notice the difference with them on or off.

Except my Scanner extension.  That one HAS to go due to the polling it does
(Visioneer).  I right-click it and close it before playing any fps sensitive
games (or watching DVD's) or it causes 'jerks' in the playback.
