Getting better FPS in N4 - Some steps to go through

I am sure that some of you have done this, but in case you have not, here
are some steps that you can go through to help you get the best  FPS you can
out of N4.

Most of you know already, but let me cover it again in case you do not.
FSAA slows down your graphics.  If you are getting bad FPS, try turning off
your FSAA if you have it on.  This makes a WORLD of difference.  On my 64meg
Geforce2 my frame rates went from 45 down to about 15 when I turned on 2x2
FSAA.

If you have a GeForce card.. use OpenGL.  Some people think that Direct3D
looks better, but then again there are alot of people like me that can not
tell the difference no matter how hard we try to :)   OpenGL will get you
alot better FPS using a GeForce card.

Also realize that unlike previous versions, you can pause the game, go into
options, change a graphic setting and go back to the game.. immediately
seeing the results. (with the exception of changing resolution and switching
from OpenGL to Direct3D and vice versa).

Use this ability to help you decide if making a change helps your frame
rate.  Pause the game, change lighting or change world detail etc and see
how it effects you immediately.

One thing though that alot of people probably are not doing is using the
Help menu to try different things.  While you are in the game, hit H for
help and you will see some things you can toggle.  M for Mirror Detail,
etc..  I know that just changing my Mirror detail picked up my FPS by about
18fps.  Maxed out it was at 42, Medium it was at 51 and Low it was at 60.
To me, that 18fps is More than worth the extra detail in the mirror.

There are alot of things you can change to help with FPS, the graphics are
very customizable to meet your tastes.

I have un-checked all the lighting.  but I still cant get rid of that annoying
"Shade" that splashes the gages and other cars.  Is it possible to turn it of?
And how?

I have a gforce2 mx card and the difference between opengl and d3d is about
1 fps. I use d3d because the only thing I run in OpenGL is half-life and I
like running half-life with fsaa.

Just make sure that you are checking the right one.  On my Geforce2 setup I
have a tab for OpenGL and one for Direct3D.  You need to make sure you check
it in the one that you use to play N4.

Also, turn V-Sync off

Cliff, does 'v-sync' being on or off matter in D3D mode using the V5?
thanks

I think that some people get flicker if it is on..   I know that I need to
turn it off to prevent flicker.

I am not exactly sure if it helps with FPS or not, I have not really
experimented with it that much
