F1 2001 - no hope of getting better textures and fps?!

by Arto Wik » Wed, 17 Oct 2001 03:35:04

I start losing the hope of getting F1 2001 run well!

My system: AMD Athalon 1.1 GHz, 256 MB
           GF2 GTS 32 MB with 12.90 driver

Symptoms: - No way of getting else than
                Triangle rate 1,8Mtri/second
                O. detail lev. Full
                T. detail lev. Minimum
          - Very low fps' when leaving the grid: 8-15
          - Quite low fps' in race: 18-22

What I have tried:
 - different resolutions from bottom to top
 - both windowedmodes  (0, 1)
 - bios agp settings 32, 64, 128, 256
 - bios enabling and disabling the 4X thing
 - different pci texture memory size from 31 to 127 MB
 - "best image quality" --> "best performance"
 - ...

The interesting part of the config.ini is (one version):
CPURATING=4
SYSTEMRAM=256
VIDEORAM=53
OBJDETAIL=3
TEXDETAIL=0
VIDEOGUID=D7B71E3E-4210-11CF-B877-463001C2C935
VIDEODRIVER=0
VIDEOMODE=6
WINDOWEDMODE=0
PRIMARYONLY=0
FSAA=0
VSYNC=0

I suppose the problem has something to do with triangle rate and
textures. But what could it be?? What surprises me most is that
those two parametrs do not seem to change, whatever I do!

Any clever ideas?

Your Triangle rate is too low. Try Detonator 6.50. Also run fraps in the
background. Have FSAA turned off in windows displays settings.

You didn't list 16 bit in your list.

I got terrible performance with 32bit and incredibly good performance
with 16bit at 1280x1024 2x2 AA.

I have Duron 950, Geforce GTS 2 64MB.

My triangle rate was a lot (can't remember - something like 13Mtri/s).

Thank you!

I have been running fraps in the backgroung. I have FSAA off in the
config of F1 2001, but I cannot find this setting in the Win display
settings! My 12.90 driver is from the Creative Blaster pages,
because my GF2 is also a Creative product. Is this Detonator driver
also suitable for my GF2?  And I still wonder, why anything I can do
with my system, does NOT affect to the Triangle rate! Not even the
640x480 16bit resolution! I think the reason must be something
else than my 12.90 driver!

speaking of detonator drivers

I run 21.81, you can get these from www.geforcefaq.com

all I can say is:

N4 = 85fps average, running a PIII 800, Geforce Ultra 64mb, 256mb Ram
etc.. beleive me, this is nice.. oh yeah runs at 1024x768 too

Thanks Bill! Yes, my display properties are set to "High Color (16 bit)"
and I have tried several f1 2001 config variations of both 16 and 32
bits alternatives...

I'm getting the following at 1024x768 res 16bit

Triangle rate=15.6
obj. det.=full
text det=high

Maybe you don't have your drivers installed right.

I have a piii 1ghz (10x100) and a geforce 2 gts 32 mb and the triangle
rate is 18.3, but the game stutters.  So my drivers are ok, but the I
think there must be something wrong with the game in certain
configurations.

I have the same problems with the 12.90 drivers, I don't get a geforce
properties tab in windows with these drivers. Try 12.81, I do get the
properties tab with those.

The WHQL 12.90 drivers have that problem. Get the 12.90 non-whql
drivers and you will get the properties tabs.

Ah!! I thought WHQL meant something like 'official drivers' or
something like that so I chose those. Thanks for the tip!

Yea, it means they are supposedly tested by Microsoft, but it makes no
difference to the speed or compatibility as far as I have noticed.

I went from 12.90 to 21.85 and that solved my problem!
Thanks to everyone!
