Picked this up on High Gears forums

NZX_Lorne over there posted that by using nVidia 7.58 ref Drivers and
the latest version of Fraps on his Geforce2 GTS he got a substantial
framerate boost.
I gave it a try and WOW !!!!!!!!

I can now run everything maxed at 1280 x 960 at 40 + FPS in the race
on my Geforce2 GTS.  Before I could get 40 + but the image quality was
on high not full and visually it makes quite a difference.

I recommend everyone try it I was sceptical but it worked !

We knew about the Fraps trick, but did the 7.58 drivers give the extra
fps boost?

Hi Andre yes its an improvement over and above the usual fraps
increase.  The main boost for me is being able to have image quality
at Full before it used to chug and now its smooth 40 fps + at
everywhere apart from Indy for some reason there its still in the
30's.

Well thanks for the tip then! I missed LHZ's original post since it
was buried deep down inside a thread :) I'm using 12.90 right now,
let's see what the 7.58 will bring me :)

Why does running *another* program concurrently increase the frame rate?  It
sounds like it should be the other way around...

Yep, it's very weird and so far I haven't seen a plausible
explanation.. but the increase of fps while running fraps is quite
dramatically.. yesterday I forgot to run fraps first, started f1 2001
wondered why the hell f1 2001 suddenly run so jerky.. :)

The 7.58 result in crashing F1 2001 for me, so I stay with 12.90 I

Are you actually seeing the Fraps counter?  What OS are you running?
I am in W2k with Gforce 2 and neither windowed or FS is showing the
FRAPS counter.  A friend of mine said the same thing although he is on
XP.

What is Fraps (and where dio I get it)

and

When i tried to up date my Ndivia drivers I got just one choice to
download from Ndivia site which appeared to be a universal driver (i
think it was 21.xx) how do I select the specific drivers you are
recommending pleae.

Yes I see the counter.. I run W98.
I installed the 7.58 but didn't notice a single fps improvement
compared to the 12.90 drivers :-/

I've been using 7.58 all along.  They work better than anything else on GPL
w. a variety of TNTs and GF2 Ultras.

FRAPS is a utility that will display frames per second on screen while in
the game.  It's at www.fraps.com.

fraps http://www.fraps.com
fraps is a small utility that measures your framerate and somehow
manages to make F1 2001 -much- faster while you run fraps.
