Here's an idea...

Create another user on your machine, and log in as that user.  See if the
CD-ROM is accessible.

If it is, then you know it is something specific to the original profile,
and should narrow down the search dramatically.

Hi,
   Also try posting your question on microsoft.public.windowsxp.games,
they have some really good tech people there that should be able to sort
out your problem.
