Help with setting 56K modems

by Andre Warrin » Thu, 10 May 2001 17:28:07

I have a 56k6 modem, but for GPL I set the speed to 28k8.. much better
and stable connection than when I set it to 56k6. It sounds weird, but
it's true..
I'm on cable, and for the ordinary pickup races I use my cable
connection. But my cable connection stops sometimes for a second or 2,
and that's not really fun when you're racing online. With my 56k6
modem set to 28k8, my pings are a bit higher (not much) but I
never-ever had a disco with my modem, so I use that for important
league races.

Oh, and turn eror control off in modem properties.

Help with setting 56K modems

Hi Phil,

That brings back memories of the early days in GPL on-line, as we were
trying to figure out the best settings for stability. <G>
Incidentally the initialization info that i included in that article
was based off a 33.6k USR (3COM) Robotics Modem.
To use those same settings with a 56k USR (3COM), you will need to turn
V90 mode off.
Do that by adding  S32=98   to the end of the initialization string.
example: AT&F1&K0&M0&U10&N13S32=98
You will need to look up your modem initialization strings for other
brands of modems..

I just wish we could educate some of the hosts in the NASCAR4 lobby
area at Sierra to raise their ridiculous latency cap levels, as 90% of
the hosts obviously have no idea of the difference between latency and
quality issues for on-line play.
The hosts in GPL used to do the same, untill they realised that quality
is far more important than latency.

Sorry for the rant <G>  but it is damn frustrating and  totally
un-necessary when i see races with latency cap limits set at less than
500ms, both in GPL & N4.

Cheers,
Ron

No worries Ron.  Your original post has served me well with my trusty
external Motorola modem in many an online GPL and now N4 race.  I may have
pings in the 2-300 range but my quality is always 99-100%.  I have quoted it
a few times at Legends Central and VROC-F2 when people have asked about
setting up their modem for online racing and will continue to keep hold of
the post until some new form of communication takes the world by storm :)

Cheers

I've just tried to do this in Win2k, but it fails... I can do whatever
I want using AT strings to my modem, and it responds correctly... BUT,
whenever I add another modem, no matter which driver, even a standard
xxK modem, and gives this an string telling it to log in slower, the
first modem  logs on using this speed as well??

And I have made sure that my to DUN connections aren't using the same
modem driver...

No matter what I do, it just always uses the slowest common speed??

Even if I set my INET to min 40k and my GPL to max 32k, the INET still
only logs on with 32k...

any ideas?

On Thu, 10 May 2001 10:43:44 GMT,

I can't help you with this one Ronnie, maybe Ron or Phil can answer
you this..
I use Win98 and in modem properties I can simply select the baudrate
and set it to 28k8...

Help with setting 56K modems

Hi Ronnie,

I am sorry but i have had nothing to do with Win2K, so i can't help you
either.
It should work, providing the Networking Protocols are the same or
similiar in Win2K as they are in Win98, but i would only be guessing if
i provided an answer for you.
One point, if you have an internal modem, that could be your problem,
as it is much easier and less hassle setting up multiple DUNS with an
external modem than it is with an internal modem.
Sorry i couldn't help you more.

Cheers,
Ron

Help with setting 56K modems

Phil, your help fixed the warping tremendously

Still have another problem though
When the driver races using the analog modem on our server with our setups
his car bottoms out on all the turns, sparks and scraping badly but doesnt
seem to affect his speed
He does not see the sparks, scraping, but we do
(fwiw, its the same ISP he used on TEN)
Tested Daytona, Rockingham, C***te

Also, if he is on the inside in the turns, any AI or other human on his
outside will warp wreck into the wall
Wont happen when he is on the outside or on str8s

We have not installed the patches yet

Thanks for any help

Tim

I'm sorry but the post I made was merely repeating information gathered by
Ron Ayton.  I followed it word for word on my system to get a stable
connection.  Sadly I don't know a great deal about setting up modems other
than what is in that post so can't really offer any more advice.

Cheers

Phil

no worries mate :), it's an external modem... but it's ok - since I'm
on a 2mbit on the job, i normally don't surf using the 56k, so i'll
just let it be at 30k :)
