Best V.90 56K Modem For Online Play??

by A. Markham *Kart44 » Wed, 08 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Guys,
With all these GREAT online ready racing sims coming out in the next
few months I need to get a better internet connection. I have some cheap
generic 56K winmodem that came with my computer but I've been told that
they're terrible for online play. Which V.90 56K modem should I start
looking at?? I heard US Robotics has very good modems but I don't know
which type to buy. They have voice/fax, fax, PCI, USB, external, and
internal brands. Which should I get?? Earthlink is my ISP and they seem
to have very good V.90 56K connections. I'd like to get a cable modem
but it's out of my price range.
Thanks,

Best V.90 56K Modem For Online Play??

Do you know who makes your existing modem, and its model number? Winmodems are
not all equal - even controllerless modems with onboard DSP are called
winmodems. I have a winmodem that uses a Lucent 1641 DSP chip, and I don't
notice any CPU hit versus an external modem. The Lucent modem uses the main CPU
for call negotiation, but not for the DSP intensive modem algorithms.

I wouldn't automatically assume that your existing modem is no good for online
play.

Keith.

If you want the best, there is none better than a USR Courier V.90
Everything.

These are corporate grade modems, and they will provide you with the best
possible connection money can buy.

They are expensive.  Expect to pay around $250 for the external.  I do
recommend the external.

If Cable is available in your area, you _really_ should figure out a way to
afford it :)

Hi there!

Check out the ELSA-Microlink 56k BASIC modem.
The easiest way is using an external modem on COM1 or COM2.
Works really good (I think even better than USR...).

Bye,
mani.

Keith,
I think my modem is an: AOpen FM56-P V.90 56K. It is a Contoller-less modem
without firmware. It has a Rockwell RLVDL56DPF/SP chipset. That's all I know. I got
that from their website at: http://www.aopenusa.com.
