Modem recomendations for online play?

I'd like to hear some experiences on this as well.  I purchased a
Diamond SupraExpress 56K modem - cheap.  While the 56K downloads
marginally faster, my 28.8 Motorola gets consistently better
ping/latency for *** - about 150 ms difference on the same system and
phone line.  Hence, the Diamond is in my wife's computer.  The other rub
and the reason I got the Diamond is that my ISP, Concentric, is still
only Kflex in my area.

So, I still maintain rock solid ping/latency with my 28.8, but can't
effectively host races.

Anyone care to share some 56K/V90 success stories?

Jim

Are you sure Concentric isn't V.90 in your area?  They've
stated on their website that the entire system has been
upgraded........I could be wrong though.  :)

Here's what Concentric says about my area:

Blah, blah.... The 56K numbers listed are Flex compatible.

Maybe I misunderstand this.  It goes on to blah about x2 modems, etc.  Nowhere
does it mention v.90.

They've got it kind of tucked away in the network news
section, here's a link to their announcement.

Stay away from Winmodems...they suck up available memory,
usually have higher ping values and just plain suck!
sorry technical term there

Four letters: ISDN!

Ping times reduced by half because there's no need for digital-analog
conversions, guaranteed 64/128kbps at all times both in and out, instant
connection.

I can ping from Finland basically anywhere in Europe under 100ms, and to the
US around 200ms.

Worth every penny (until I can get a cable or a T1 line :))
