F1GP: Question: Modem Play

by STEFA.. » Wed, 16 Feb 1994 00:20:01

Howdy all:

Allow me to introduce myself;

Name's Peter, an avid armchair racer, new to the group, but experienced
in both ***space and racing. Home machine: Gateway 2000 33 i386DX, Speed
Star Original w/ 1Meg, 4Megs of RAM. F1GP running at 120% CPU with 16 (I
think) frames/sec. Had a Gravis Original joystick. Broke it while moving
around Prost at San Marino :(

Here's todays question:
My modem is set up for COM4. Try as I may, I can't get F1GP to recognize
it.  I'd rather not change the COM port, as the changes may interfere
with my Video Spigot board.  Is there anyone out there with a solution,
please?
Also, did you guys make up a FAQ yet?
Thanks

Peter Burk

if you are runnng at 120%cpu, you are actually running in "slow motion".
Once your game gets above 100%, the frame rate is not accurately
reported. you are making the game easier than it already is ;-)

Sell that internal modem and get yourself a proper external modem - Com 1
or com 2; no problem. Unplug when not needed. The Spigot is a serial
device???

Let me know if there is one, because then I'll place it on my ftp site.

Peter - nice chatting again

Am I to take this that people actually want one?! I mentioned that I would
be happy to manage one but received a whole 2 replies to the posting so I
guessed that there was no need, now I am still willing to write one, but only
if there is the demand!  SO what do you think......

What details if any do you have about the next version? Over here on
this side of the pond I have only heard very brief mention of it.

Will this FAQ be for PC owners only?  Hope not, it has sold more copies on the
Amiga than PC, as it has been in the Top 30 since its release.  Please make
an FAQ which includes Amiga and PC owners (don't worry about THE Atari ST
owner!!! hehe).

OK, I have been persuaded......! (Nothing like a bit of ego massaging to spurr
someone into action!) I will start work on an FAQ this week, and post first
draft sometime next week, uni work permitting.  The way I am going to do this
is create a general layout with what knowledge I have then get you all to mail
me your info, and thus put together the full thing.  The only other thing to
decide is what for it is going to take.  Do you want one that tells you about
all the tracks and the best set-ups (Or probably just hints to rule out
spoilers), one that explains what the system requirements are, or a trivial one
like what race does it default to in the US (It is Britain over here!). I will
probably do all three, but we dont want it to be too huge.

Anyway, about F1GP2, I heard a few rumours, and then read an article about the
top 40 games for 1994 in a magzine. (Predictions obviousley)  They said that
Geoff Crammond was working on a follw up and that it would be out this year,
then in another magazine, the interviewed Papyrus (Of indycar fame) and asked
if they were worried that Crammond was working on an INDY car game! So
basically your guess is as good as mine, but at least it looks as if he is
working on something.....

Well the preliminary version was posted last Friday and the new version is
almost complete.

I don't have an Amiga or ST, but I will include any information I get for them
in the FAQ (except lap times as they seem to differ on each machine).  If any
of you who own the game mail me anything it will go in, providing the FAQ isnt
going to double in size!  I will also be adding a tech section at the end so
that we can all have a go at figuring out the file formats etc.

I am considering running a fastest lap times competition, but I am not sure if
there would be too much conflict with the competitions that are already
running, anyway he revised FAQ should be with you by the end of the week so
I'll see you then!

        Gordon

P.S. Does anyone know if I shlud maile the FAQ anywhere special, like a
special newsgroup or something?  Thanks for the info...

I mailed Microprose's Compuserve address and was told by one of their
support people that a F1GP2 is being made.  The MPS person didn't give any
time frame, however.    I expect F1GP2 will be of very good quality just like
the 1st one, only far better and of course have the excellent modem play
that just works like in v1.05 of F1GP1.  I think other game companies should
look at how good a job was done on v1.05's modem play and duplicate it's
quality in that it just plain works, once you turn off data compression and
error control.

It will really give Indycar Racing a big run for it's money if Geoff
decides that more things should be adjustable on the car, like fuel load,
camber, shocks, pressures, castor, anti-roll bars, etc. and changes the
color of the cars whilst driving to the appropriate team colors and the
engine sounds to suit the appropriate engine coniguration, so a V10 has
it's distinctive wail, a V12 has it's howl and a V8 has it's purposeful
snarl.

Don't let us down Geoff!!

And let's not forget native GUS support, with 3d sound
(now that really would be smart!)

BTW: Anyone else still play the old Geoff Crammond game
'Revs'? Ahh, those were the days, 1:21.3 round Silverstone,
in 4 amazing colours (blue, green, red, black)... Stunning
game. especially as you consider it ran on an Acorn BBC 'B'
with only 32k of memory (incl screen ram)

i just played it on a software c64 emulator on my pc....
it's Miha's c64s emulator and you really SHOULD get it so you
can download Revs from watson.mbb.sfu.ca and ENJOY! Even the
sounds and the joystick support work just fine so Revs is back!
