f1gp modem play performance question.

A friend and I have recently started playing f1gp via modem .  I know
that in modem play f1gp frame rates slow down.   I was wondering if
there  is a way to fine tune the game options in order to get the best
possible frame rate.  Both machine are p90s with 14.4 modems. Mine
with 8MB ram and his with 16MB ram.   Any suggestions?
