The immersion of GPL not yet achieved!

Dear sim racers,

to me the new nice sims like rFactor and GTL have been a very positive
experience - as to many, I suppose. Anyhow, there is something that
dirturbs me... The feel of "being there" is not so clear anymore with
these new sims compared to my feel with the grand old GPL in "those days"!
I cannot find out, why I feel like that. And it becomes even more strange,
because when I today try the old GPL, it seems to be so much less advanced in
terms of physics etc. compared to the new sims... Anyhow the immersion,
feeling of "being there", was much better in old times with GPL, than
it is today with rF and GTL, and the same today(!) with GPL!  Strange!
Any explanations?  :-)

You can't repeat the first experience...

You have to want to 'be there' and you obviously don't.

GPL has a fluidity to it (I don't mean frame rate) that when you are on
form racing with close competition it becomes the most immersive racing sim.

However, with the advances in other sim the immersion factor is diluted
as it no longer feels quite right.

Yet no other other sim has quite captured the feel factor - the black
magic bit that gives that in the zone feeling that GPL did.

NetKarPro may do it with the FF1600/1800 but it needs larger grids with
longer races to compare with an Int Long GPL multiplayer race.

Or we see if Kaemmer can do it again or whether GPL was a fluke after all...

Cheers

Tony,

I know that part of it for me was the era and danger of the cars and
circuits.  I still feel amazed while going through the Masta Kink that
guys actually did that.  Racing down that hill nose to gearbox and
holding my breath that I got the timing of the left/right  flick
correctly and got past the house on the left.  I used to climb out of
my***pit (Hyper) soaking wet.  The modern cars, aero and safety sam
tracks take it out for me.  I'm still looking forward to the GPL 55
mod.

Times and expectations have changed nearly 180 degrees since GPL was
released.  We were "thrilled" to finally have something that slightly
resembled the reality of driving a racecar.  In todays world the reality in
sims has reached a level and quality which now prevents such an extreme leap
that GPL was able to achieve over it's competition.

Right now we should be in sim racing heaven but the reality is simracing
isnt even close to what it used to be when we had a limited number of sims.
Back in the day we could reasonably limit the numbers of retards racing
because it took a fairly large sum of cash and a few undamaged brain cells
to actually build a *** rig and get onliine and race..  As
Rex/fredrickson has proven any retarded moron can now get online and ruin
the fun for everyone.

Real Racing is a game that depends on the reality of death (biggest fn
balls) and the simple idea that a stupid mistake can kill you or others
gives actual reality a degree of respect that cannot ever be reproduced in
any simulation.

How many *** simracers of the past now race real cars?  I know of quite
a few myself a few of which started simracing with GPL.

The big difference is that they weren't on ice... ;)

I'll never forget the moment when I first tried the GPL demo and
you could see the supension *work* while driving. I guess it's similar
to losing your ***ity: it only happens once in your life (hopefully
;), and is a special moment to think fondly of (hopefully again ;)
thereafter.

Cheers, uwe

It is an excellent example of one of gpl's strengths though, going through
the Masta Kink as fast as possible instils genuine fear of failure as you
approach it and realistic relief/satisfaction when you come out the other
side successfully.

I suspect it's the "ISI Effect".

I've never warmed up to ISI's physics engine's either.  rFactor is the
closest, but still not quite there.

Age.
Because you are 6 years older?

Well, does it make that big difference from 47 years to 53 years?  ;-)

That explains it even more - you were in your prime when the older GP cars
were trundling around.  It's hardly surprising that they float your boat
more.

That doesn't explain it for me Steve. I was a grand total of one in 1967 and
the era for me was the Gilles Villenueve years but no open wheel racer has
come close to satisfying me like GPL did.
