VROC races - latency issues on a 56k

by Jason Hawl » Thu, 05 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I've been playing numerous races over on VROC with my 56k modem
connection.  I'm curious about what latency measurements other 56k
modem users are getting.  I average between .5-.6 sec of latency.
This seems high.  But even on servers I ping low too I seem to get the
same latency readings.  Is this a v.90 issue?  I've tried turning my
error checking and compression off - but no improvement.  I've
followed the suggestions in the GPL online faq and even played around
with my core.ini a little.  Any suggestions?

Well Jason, I've got a 56K modem and I get .150 - .350, .400 average
latency. This is usually when connectred to cable modems. I won't
practice or race with over .350, to much warping for me and others.

Check around your area for other ISP's. I've got two that are very
similar in speed, but latency varies by .050 - .100.

I too have been dealing with some modem problems with GPL online racing.
Two differenct 56K modems cannot connect to any hosts I've tried and show
high latency, .500-.600.

A 33.6 modem connects consistantly with lower latency, .200-.300, but with
warping and clock smashes.

What's interesting here is the two 56Ks are both 'controlerless' winmodem
types while the 33.6 has serial controler.

I have a 56K w/controler coming. I WILL get to the bottom of this. :)

There has been many posting in the new groups about poor latency using
Winmodems. Winmodems and online *** don't mix well

Just a followup - I changed ISPs last week and all my latency issues
have magically gone away.
