GPL Zandy Race Tonight on VROC

I hosted a VROC race at Zandvoort last night and we had quite a good
turnout. In the pits after the race, I announced to several of you that I
would be hosting a Zandy race every night this week, except Friday-Sun, at
12:00 midnight EST. Well, my plans have changed (my wife threatened to car
her lawyer).

NEW SCHEDULE

Practice: 10:40pm EST
Practice: 20 mins.
Race Time: 11:00 pm EST

Field Limit: 15

Course: Zandvoort
Race: Int Long

Host:
PII-450-128MB
Voodoo Banshee 16MB AGP
ADSL at 1.2Mbps/256k

Considerate, responsible drivers of all skill levels are welcome.

If you can join us, please adjust your graphics/sound settings so that you
maintain a consistent 36 fps to limit client-induced warping.

Also, unless there are serious objections, I'll post qualifying and race
results to this thread after each race...Come get your name in lights!

See you at Zandy!

Never :-)

I need more practice. I can depressedly say that it took me 15 tries to
get beyond the first lap racing the AI at Zandy today.....

Well, geez, Graeme, *your* AI must have an NPT of something like 0.80!

No wonder it's hard!

I'm not surprised if your Zandy setup is anything like that one you sent
me for Kyalami - jeez - how hard is it to drive? Nicked bits from it
(rollbar and gears mainly) and put it on your earlier (easier to drive)
setup, so got a happy(ish) medium in the end.

Glad to know you're only mortal like the rest of us anyway ;)

Race Report

Dave Schwab served notice in practice that he was going to be a force to be
reckoned with by taking the pole with a blistering 1:26.38 in his Brabham.

Then the fun began:

One driver got out of position on the grid and was***ed sideways when the
flag dropped.

A second driver apparently suffered a failing engine, prior to the green.

Several impacts and a starting grid FIRE ensued.

All but a small handful of drivers either made contact or conducted one or
more off-road excursions on the first lap. Wild times at Zandvoort!

Despite all this, Chris Cavin brought his Flying Pig home with a comfortable
margin of victory of 53.29 seconds over Brett Reschke in his Ferrari. Cavin
also took fastest lap honors with a 1:27.05.

Come join the fun tonight on VROC. Practice begins at 10:15pm EST (0315
GMT). Race at 11:00pm EST (0400 GMT). Come early, get your absolute best
time in, get to the front, and avoid the mayhem!

Drivers: Please remember to adjust your graphics and sound settings so that
you maintain a steady 36fps to minimize warping. Your fellow drivers will
appreciate it! Thanks.

heehee! That was going to be good. A lot of traffic meant tough
qualifying, so with about 3 minutes left, I dumped my race fuel for 3
gallons, then only got one flying lap before the session ended. You
guessed it, the good one!

In the race on lap 3 or 4, I made a mistake and dropped a wheel on the
sand under braking for Tarzan and spun away a 2 second lead on Chris. I
got back on track and was going ok until the infamous net "disco." oh
well. It was fun and Chris did a great job.

Maybe see you again tonight! Thanks for the great hosting Jack!

Race Report

Early in the race a three-way battle for the lead unfolded with pole-sitting
Lotus driver Pat Dotson holding the early lead over teammate Hans Buscher
and Ferrari driver Remco Moedt. The three fought fiercely until lap 4 when
Dotson dropped his left rear off, coming out of the always treacherous
right-hander between Hondenviak and Tunnel Oost. Buscher also lost control
as he darted to the right to avoid his teammate Dotson who was sliding back
across the racing surface after a wild ride up the banking outside the turn,
leaving Moedt to charge away with the lead.

Dotson rejoined to begin a heroic effort to reel in the escaping Moedt. As
the chase continued, Dotson was spun on lap 10 entering Tarzanbocht by a
backmarker whom he had passed before entering the turn. Undaunted, Dotson
quickly recovered and proceeded to set the race's fastest lap (1:25.78) in
his successful bid to once again make contact with Moedt. By lap 13, Moedt
and Dotson were again nose-to-tail. The two diced spectacularly for 7 laps
with Dotson unable to overtake Moedt until lap 20 of the 27-lap event when
Moedt dove a little too deeply into Tarzanbocht, allowing Dotson to slip by
on the inside.

A frustrated Moedt retired on lap 23 after tangling with Coventry driver
David Ewing, leaving Dotson to cruise home with the win while lapping the
entire remaining field.

When interviewed in the pits after the race , Dotson's only comment was an
animated "WooHoo!"
