(Long) GPL unable to connect to races on VROC?

by pjgt.. » Wed, 06 Nov 2002 06:59:54

Ok, a mate (Scotty) has got a problem, he cannot connect GPL to any race
servers in WinVROC.

I helped him build his pc, and as he liked GPL, I also installed a copy on
his machine (using my own GPL cd) and also installed the no cd patch so he
could play GPL cos he didn;t have a GPL disc.

He has an Intel P3 500 cpu, with 128MB ram, with a Voodoo3 graphics card
and SB16 sound card and uses Windows 98se and a US Robotics external 56k
modem. The pc connects to the net fine and does not have any dial up
problems.

He has GPL v1.2.0.1 and VROC v2.1.0.0

His pc works fine and GPL works fine (offline) with no probs, he even
managed to connect to my server and race with me when I gave him the IP
address of my pc. So he can physically connect, his modem works ok, etc.

However, when he tried to connect to VROC, he can see the race list and
the chat messages, but he cannot connect to the races (none are green) so
I assume the VROC IP address is ok, or else he would not get the race
list.

VROC however, shows his GPL version as being v0.0.0.3 even though I know
it is v1.2.0.1 (which GPL shows on the start up screen when you start the
game).

I thought maybe it was the no cd patch or something wrong with his
installation of GPL? So he went out today and bought a GPL disc on budget
from PC World.

I uninstalled his old GPL, including all references I could find in the
registry.

I then installed GPL from the new cd, and also installed the v1.2 patch
(included on the disc also). I also installed the discofix patch. We then
tried again to connect to VROC, but still got no green races (only red).

So, I thought maybe its the discofix patch that VROC doesn't like? So I
uninstalled GPL again. Then re-installed it again, and installed the v1.2
patch, but this time we didn't install the disco fix patch. But still he
couldn't connect to VROC races (still not green?)

So now I think, maybe its his VROC installation thats not working. Maybe
his VROC program still thinks he has a faulty GPL installation?

So I uninstall WinVROC. Then re-install it and reconfigure it for his new
GPL installation, but still it doesn't work?

Now I'm completely out of ideas? Does anyone have any idea why he cannot
race using VROC, but he can race using a direct IP connection? Any help
would be appreciated as he is desperate to race on-line.

Thanx....

I think there was something about the path.
If I opened and confirmed it, it worked thereafter i think?
It could be something like that..

You mean the fact that you have to manually use the browse button to find
the GPL folder in the options screen in VROC?

Thanx for the suggestion, but we tried that, and still cannot connect to
any servers?

Anyone got any other ideas?

I have the same problem but can't see any races at all, it
says connection refused and all this after i switched from
dial-up to ADSL. I have tried everything and cannot get it
to work online, offline no problem. If anybody can help me
as well i would be forever in you debt.
Thanks Again.
Steve!

Make sure he created a user profile in GPL...

Do you have the line,  alternate_ip_addr_lookup=1  , under [Communications]
in your core.ini file ?
Sid.

I had similar problem (VROC showing GPL 1.0 instead of 1.2). If I remember
corectly I uinstalled GPL and VROC. Then insalled GPL and 1.2 patch, and
then VROC. I think it worked. Mybe you cam search registry and delete
everything considering VROC after you uninstal it, so it doesn't use any old
information.

Have you got the right IP address in the vroc.ini?
It changed a while back and is different to the one in the install.
I don't have it to hand but ask in the vroc chat room and someone will
post it up.

Also, make sure your firewall (if you have one) is letting vroc get
through. If you have zonealarm, lots of people have had vroc problems
with it.

He has the right IP address, I have checked and its the same as mine and
mine works ok. If he didn't have the right IP he wouldn't see any races
at all, but he is seeing the races being hosted, he just cannot connect.

He does not have a firewall or anti virus program running, (he only has
a dial up connection at the moment) so there are no conflicts with
either of those.

Thanx anyway...

Make sure WinVROC's path to GPL has a backslash on the end.

This:

  C:\SIERRA\gpl\

Not this:

  C:\SIERRA\gpl

It's a bug in WinVROC.  The missing backslash causes WinVROC to not be
able to find GPL.exe.

When WinVROC can't find GPL.exe, it says you have GPL version 0.0.0.3 in
the status bar at the bottom of WinVROC.

In the small window at the bottom right corner of the WinVROC screen,
under the chat window.
