3D Cards - Which one?!

3D Cards - Which one?!

by Ben Farnema » Wed, 06 Jan 1999 04:00:00

My area seems a bit 3D illiterate.  No one in any computer store in my area
has heard of rendition.  I have heard rumors that they can be fairly
inexpensive now, and was wondering about the name of a good one.  Also, if I
were to buy a Diamond Monster II (most people seem to be happy with them),
what should I expect to pay?  Or, does everyone have better luck with the
Blaster version?

I don't like small towns for one reason - they think they can rip you off
because you have nowhere else to go.  Anyone had any luck ordering one off
the net? Which sites?

Just, read on another newsgroup that Diamond is discontinuing the Monster
II, and has basically dropped the support for it, thus the rebates they are
offering.

I was considering picking one up, but may wait until the Voodoo III comes
out, and see what Voodoo II prices do! It may become rather affordable to
run 2 voodoo II's in SLI mode by then!

Which card you want is totally dependent on the sims you drive. If you drive
papy sims. n2-gpl, then get the thriller 8meg. However it is not the card to run
for 3dfx supported games. Post some more info so we can help.

Hercules Thriller 8MB, probably the most expensive of the renditions.
Diamond Stealth (s?)220.  4MB, probably a fair bit cheaper, expect in the $50
range now?

I really don't think there is much diff between any of the reference design
cards.

How about the Guillemot version direct from the company?  www.guillemot.com

For general prices, check www.pricewatch.com, but bear in mind many are "come
on" prices, high shipping, questionable companies.  I've made a couple of
purchases from www.wvcsi and have been happy with them.  Check the vendor
survey at the sysopt site www.sysopt.com/vendsurv.html.

I run N99 from Papy almost exclusively.  I've held off getting GPL mostly
because of my machine:

P233MMX
64MB Ram
3.2 Gig HD
2 MB standard SVGA Card
TM Nascar Pro W/P
Piss-Poor 28.8 Modem
CHEAP Ess Sound Card

I plan to upgrade to ABIT/C300A soon, but have to feed the kids, ya know...
