N3 not using GPL Physics?!?

N3 not using GPL Physics?!?

by Adam Zerli » Sun, 16 May 1999 04:00:00

I was just browsing around, and caught this at SimRacing (www.simracing.com)
On the E3 page, Marc went to see the Papy booth.  Here is what he wrote that
concerns me:

"Two sims [Legends of Nascar and N3] using the GPL physics? Nope! Sean
[Gleason] said that because of technical issues the GPL physics won't be a
part of the Legends sim, nor will they be in the release of N3. That's right
folks. The long awaited sequel to N2 WON'T be using the physics engine form
Grand Prix Legends!

Sean explained that the GPL physics never worked properly for N3, and that
Papyrus didn't have enough time to get it right and have it released on time
(N3 is already several months behind schedule). This was disappointing news!
Do the people at Sierra realize what many are expecting of N3 - namely that
it will incorporate the GPL physics? Man, I was starting to get some really
bad feelings about all this.

Sean also mentioned that LoN would not be interchangeable with N3, but this
could mean either two things: 1) that N3 and LoN are simply separate
products, but sharing similar internal structures, or 2) the two sims are
coded differently; enough so that anyone wanting to interchange the two
would have a tough time doing so."

I sure hope Sean was wrong about that!!

Hope they have something better up their sleeve.

I am not looking forward to N3 at all now.

Well there were a few of us who already mentioned this on the newsgroup but were
scolded and flamed for saying so <VBG>

Expect a "N2000" with an "updated" physics engine based on N2.  IE... more setup
options like springs, sway bars, etc and probably items such as dynamic skid
marks and damage.

I would expect that NASCAR Legends would be based upon the N2 engine.

Again,  I cant provide proof or guarantee any of this so don't flame me for
stating my "expectations"  ;)

Apparently I missed that. Extremely dissappointing! If the physics are closer to
N2 than GPL then ... I may not buy it. Since last year I have stopped driving
anything but GPL and will not settle for a product that is far below the level
some of us expect. I recently reofrmatted and reloaded my system and did not
even load N2/N99 or any other driving sim.  On a related note the post about
Trans Am is disturbing also, "if" they release it.
JM - could have been a great year for sims....

Gee does this mean that the GPL engine is now available for use with
a current CART sim??
doh!  (time to think about buying Toca 2 if papy is gonna recycle N2 again!)

With all the GPL posts here and the questions about it, [I saw in mydejanews
that there were close to 50,000 posts on GPL, that as in Grand Prix Legends.] I
am glad that it is not based on GPL, as that would be more work than fun to
drive. And yes, I have played GPL and would rather have N2/NR99 any day.

That Legends of NASCAR [ NOT Nascar as is posted here frequently ], does sound
interesting.

To each their own.  After getting used to GPL, I've given up on N99
with the sole exception of TPTCC.  It's just no fun to slam around the
track in a completely unrealistic manner with impunity.

The reason for so many posts about GPL is because it's currently the best
racing sim there is..  If N3 were to have come out like we wanted it, you would
have seen more posts in the same amount of time about N3 as you do of GPL.  That's
only because N3 would have been the best racing sim of that time.

Almost forgot..  If you were to check out the TEN Nascar NG, and add all those
posts, your 50K posts about GPL would be shadowed by N2, or at least very close to
the same numbers for both sims.

Right on! I just relformatted and reloaded my system and GPL is the only driving
sim I reinstalled.So long N2/BGN/N99, ICR2,GP2,SCGT,etc.etc.etc. Still hoping
N2000 si closer to GPL....

You are forgetting one important item...   N3 would have been based upon the GPL
physics, but the cars would have aerodynamics which Grand Prix cars do not!

Personally... if you are just looking for ease of driving, then there are TONS of
arcade NASCAR racers out there.

N2/N99 is long in the tooth.  If it were not for racing in my leagues on TEN,
etc...  N2/N99 would not even be on my machine.  If it were not for the multiplayer
ability of TEN and racing against other real people, N2/N99 would blow chunks.  I
don't think Ive run a race offline in well over a year.  I even tend to do my setup
testing online.

First I was sad about the N3 news. Your suspicion (sp?) gives me goose
bumps! Nascar is nice, but gimme Cart first...

It may have been though.  There weren't a lot of high end racing games
