N3 - 4th gear sounds like S**T when using 3DFX but not with D3D

I have got a PII 450, 128 megs of RAM, SB16 Sound Card, Riva TNT card and a
Voodoo 1 card for 3DFX. Both video cards run the game fine, but when I
choose to use the 3DFX driver, whenever I get the car into 4th gear, it
starts making this god awful racket. Sounds like the car just dropped 2
cylinders. It's just a real bad static noise. But like I said, only happens
in 4th gear and when I use the 3DFX driver. If I switch to D3D, everything
is fine, just doesn't look quite as good. Anyone know what this could be?
What would switching video modes have to do with the sound?

Could be! I was going to suggest that he try a PCI soundcard.
The SB16 was notorious for static and PCI will certainly help
framerate.

Yeah, a PCI soundcard and a used Voodoo2 also - he's kinda holding back that
CPU with a V1 and SB16.
