I am expecting my copy of GPL from the mail soon.  I don't have
raching wheels yet (I plan to get ACT LABS's FF wheel at the end of the
school semester), but there is one thing I am wondering about...

What is your best LAP time on any of the GPL tracks with a keyboard, and
only a keyboard -- no pedals, no shifters, no joysticks, no wheels?

Seriously??

I managed a 1:11 in the Honda at Watkins Glen.

Why??  I was bored at work...    :-))))

1:54 at Monza in the BRM...:) with automatic gearbox...
And I have never won a race.... I always "close the gate", and have done
that for 19 months with a couple of hours driving a week.....

Why the h... shall this game be so hard with keyboard??

I don't know how to get off the grid fast..:(
If I speed up, the gearbox (auto-transmission, that is) shifts to 1.gear
and I get the penalty for false start...:( if I wait for the green flag
all the competitors are away much faster than me.... and when I try to
reach the competitors I  always ends up in the grass or the sand...:(

I have also tried to press both brakes and speeder, but it never
works...:(

A friendly soul sent me a setup-file the other day, so now I can use my
favorite keys..:) "A" for forward, "Z" for breaking...:)

GPL unlike GP2 isn't easy to play using a keyboard.  Geoff
Crammond obviuosly realises that there are lots of people out
there who don't wish (or have the money to) to spend a fortune
on expensve controller equipment.

One of the joys of GP2 was that it was instantly accesible to
anyone with a reasonably powered computer,  you didn't have to
go out and spend money on controllers/3d cards, you just loaded
it up and went racing.

GP2 had a steering help system if you used the keys which would
stop you from over turning, it was still a fun and realistic
experiance with this control method, not to forget it was also
the fastest.

Hmm, don't really agree that using keys s the fastest method, did you really
mean this?
Using a wheel and pedals cuts seconds off the lap-time.

Hmm...I imagine you'll make it 2m before you get around Watkins Glen and
after you butcher the 90 you'll kill yourself...

Don't you even have some cheap joystick for flight sims or something?
Almost anything is better than the keyboard...just something analog!!!

George, I tried this after I knew how to control these cars, and I must tell
you that in all honest, being new at the sim, and being on keys, you haven't
got a hope.

Once you get a wheel, you can enjoy this sim which puts all others to shame,
until then just maybe learn the tracks and study how to build setups.

Ah, Gp2.....when it was released I spent 2 months in hospital,
seriously ill. I had a laptop, and was able to play GP2 on that.
Heck, it was a fun time! Playing Gp2 all day long while in bed. <g>

He was probably mixing up with F1GP, the predecessor of GP2. There, it was very
obviously the fastest control method.

But as you say, nowhere near in GP2...

Well I used to run in and run my own little GP2 league and us
keyboarders were often faster than the wheel guys.

This is pure NONSENSE. You are talking about F1GP. In GP2, excellent
wheel drivers are 2-3s faster than excellent keyboard drivers. Period.
Any hotlap league out there can give you the facts.

This may be true now, but I remember when GP2 came out the KB drivers were
extremely competitive and had some of the top laps.  It took a while to unseat
them.  Good wheels (and joysticks?) were still somewhat of a novelty, and the
keyboard guys even found a way to disable throttle help for better control.
